(May 17) Saskatoon Lions kicked off the 1939 Northern Saskatchewan season with a 12-1 trouncing of Prince Albert Bohemians. Lions turned a promising contest into a romp with an eight run outburst in the 5th inning of the seven inning game. Saskatoon pounded out 16 hits with pitcher Bill Vogeli leading the way with four safeties and Ian Lowe and Roy Schappert each with three. Lowe's blasts included a homer and triple. Schappert also had a four-bagger. Vogeli who picked up the win also scored three times. Catcher Andy Zwack poked a pair of triples for Prince Albert.

(May 17) At Bruno, Aberdeen shaded the host crew 14-11 in a slugest.
(May 19) Saskatoon and Aberdeen fought to a 4-4 draw in Northern Saskatchewan Baseball League action at Aberdeen. The game was called after six inning because of darkness. Each team had five hits. Hugh Crooks fanned 12 Saskatoon batters in the abbreviated contest. Gord Inkster started for the Lions. Ian Lowe belted a two-run homer for the Lions in the first inning. "Pep" Forward, the Aberdeen catcher, was outstanding in cutting off runners at home plate on three occasions. In one, while chasing a runner back to first, Forward lured a runner off third, then sprinted to tag him out before he reached the plate.

(May 19) Allan Young went the distance scattering nine hits as Prince Albert notched its first win of the season, 10-2 over Bruno. Prince Albert took advantage of ten errors by Bruno, four by pitcher Hassen. George Vandale of Bruno had the game's longest blow, a triple. Johnny Boden had a two-bagger for the winners.

(May 26) Saskatoon Lions announced the acquisition of catcher Laurel Harney. The young Edmonton resident played most of the 1938 season with the touring House of David and had a tryout with the Seattle Indians of the Pacific Coast League. Harney is rated as one of the best players developed in northern Alberta in recent years.
(May 26) Orlando Jantz and Reinie Kembel combined on a five-hit shutout as Saskatoon downed Bruno 6-0. Jantz worked the first four frames with Kembel going five for the win. Kembel fanned ten and walked just one. Oak Toombs led the attack with three hits. Ace Corbin took the loss.

(May 26) Prince Albert broke loose for five runs in the top of the first inning but went on to drop an 8-7 decision to Aberdeen. Three of the first inning markers came on bases on balls. The host team closed the gap with three runs in its half of the first inning. The teams were tied 7-7 after five innings. Aberdeen scored the winner with two out in the bottom of the 9th as A. Nowosad reached safely and E. Hamm sacrificed him to second. R. Jackson, pinch-hitting for McKay punched one into the outfield to score Nowosad. E. Hamm and Woody Huckaby led the winners each with four hits. Pep Forward and A. Nowosad had three apiece. Charlie Crawford had three hits for Prince Albert. D. Jackson survived 18 hits to register the win.

(May 28) The Prince Albert Bohemians laid a 13 – 3 plastering on the Bruno Big Chiefs in an N.B.L. game played in Bruno. The Brewery Gang smacked a total of 18 hits off 3 Bruno chuckers in support of winning hurler “Lefty” Logue. Charlie Crawford led the offensive onslaught with four base knocks. Andy Zwack and Johnny Boden both rapped a trio of safeties while Teddy Rock and Mike Dubnyk each had a pair of hits. A. Anderson collected 3 base blows for the Chiefs.

(May 31) The Saskatoon Lions and Aberdeen played to a 2 – 2 draw in a Northern Baseball League contest at Cairns Field. It was the second time in the current campaign that the two teams have battled to a tie. The game was halted after nine innings of play as darkness prevailed. The Saskatonians had a 4 to 3 edge in base hits garnered with Lions’ first sacker Buck Crawford the only player on either team to stroke a brace of safeties.

(June 1) A disastrous first inning in which 11 batters faced Bill Sampson, nicking him for six hits and seven runs, spelled defeat for the Prince Albert Bohemians at Bohemian Park and provided the hustling team from Aberdeen with a 7 – 2 victory and a lead in the N.B.L. standings. Aberdeen’s seven-run merry-go-round was started off by a leadoff homer off the bat of second sacker J. Hamm. McKay of the visitors pitched a steady game, surrendering but seven hits, two each to Andy Zwack and “Lefty” Logue. Hugh Crooks, A. Nowosad, “Woody” Huckaby and “Bud” Huckaby all collected two base blows for the winners.

(June 9) Paced by the two-hit, shutout pitching of Teddy Dahl, the Prince Albert Bohemians blanked Aberdeen 2 – 0 in a scheduled Northern Baseball League game to spoil the visitors hitherto perfect record and boost the homesters in the standings. It was the first victory for Prince Albert over Aberdeen in three tries this season. Dahl whiffed 12 batters in a sterling mound performance, his first pitching assignment of the year. The Bohemians collected seven hits off the slants of losing hurler Hughie Crooks including a three-bagger by catcher Andy Zwack. Both Prince Albert runs were plated in the fourth frame on RBI singles by “Lefty” Logue and Chuck Carle. Logue and second sacker Teddy Rock of the winners both had a pair of singles.

(June 12) Although touched for 11 safeties, Dave “Lefty” Logue received excellent defensive support as he pitched the Prince Albert Bohemians to a 4 – 0 whitewashing of the Aberdeen nine in a Northern Baseball League game. Losing hurler Hughie Crooks struck out 10 Bohemian batters but was not as fortunate as his teammates committed six errors behind him. Charlie Crawford, Doug Lane and Bill Sampson all drilled a brace of singles for the winners while catcher Pep Forward, with a triple and single, led the Aberdonians at the dish. A. Nowosad and E. (June 16) The Saskatoon Lions maintained their undefeated record in the Northern Baseball League with a 6 – 1, seven-inning victory over the Prince Albert Bohemians at Cairns Field. Catcher Laurel Harney drilled a bases-loaded triple in the third frame to push the Lions into the lead which they never relinquished. Reinie Kembel tossed a six-hitter for the mound win, besting Teddy Dahl who limited the winners to but four base hits. Charlie Crawford of the Beer Barons was the only hitter on either team to register two hits. Darkness prevented play after completion of the seventh frame.

(June 16) A bottom of the ninth inning rally lifted the Aberdeen nine to a thrilling 8 to 7 victory over the luckless Bruno Big Chiefs in N.B.L. action. Down by one run beginning their last turn at bat, the Aberdonians combined three hits and a walk to squeeze by the Big Chiefs and saddle “Lefty” Meyer with the mound loss. J. McKay struck out seven in picking up the win. “Woody” Huckaby of the winners and first baseman Eckert of the Chiefs shared batting honors in this game, collecting four base hits apiece. Hughie Crooks laced a triple and double for Aberdeen.

(June 22) Two costly errors in the second inning paved the way for the Saskatoon Lions to register a 4 – 3 victory over the Bruno Big Chiefs in a scheduled Northern Baseball League fixture at Bruno. The win kept the Lions at the top of the circuit as they retained their undefeated record in league play this season. RBI singles in the fifth frame by Roy Schappert and Laurel Harney gave the Saskatonians their margin of victory and provided starter “Slim” Burke with the run support he needed for the win. Hub City catcher Harney led all swatters with a trio of one-baggers. His counterpart behind the platter, Tyler, paced the Big Chiefs with a brace of singles.

(June 23) A story-book seventh inning in which “Lefty” Logue and a double play dramatically cut off a dangerous rally that threatened to engulf the Bohemians plus two runs by the locals in the last half of the inning, gave the Prince Albert Bohemians a 6 – 4 victory over the luckless Bruno Big Chiefs. It was the Chiefs’ seventh straight loss in the Northern Baseball League. With the score knotted at 4 – 4 in the first half of the fateful seventh frame and one batter retired, Logue was beckoned to the mound from the outfield to take over from Bill Sampson who had put two Bruno runners on base with free passes. Another base on balls loaded the sacks before Bruno first baseman Eckert drilled a hot comebacker to Logue who coolly fired the ball to Andy Zwack for a force out at home followed by a relay to first for the inning-ending twin-killing. The Boh’s then scored a brace in their half of the inning on Chuck Carle’s two-run single. Prince Albert collected nine hits off loser “Ace” Corbin, three off the bat of shortstop Johnny Boden. A pair of doubles highlighted Boden’s offensive output. Outfielder Chuck Carle kicked in with a triple and single for the winners while Andy Zwack singled twice. C. Vandale picked up a double and single for Bruno while Corbin poked out a pair of one-baggers.

(June 27) The Saskatoon Lions chalked up their fifth straight victory without a defeat in the Northern Baseball League and, at the same time, broke the jinx which has followed them against Aberdeen all season. After playing to 2 – 2 and 4 – 4 ties with the Aberdonians, the Lions found their batting eye against Hughie Crooks to blast out 13 base hits, including three doubles, as they hammered the visitors 9 – 1 in a contest terminated after eight innings when darkness set in. Bill Vogeli went all the way on the hill for the Leos, surrendering but four singles, to earn the victory. Roy Schappert , Oak Toombs, Max Bentley, Eddie Major and Laurel Harney all had two hits for the Bridge City brigade, with doubles included in the totals of Toombs and Major.

(June 30) The Prince Albert Bohemians moved into second place in the Northern Baseball League with a 3 – 1 victory over the Bruno Big Chiefs in Bruno. The loss for the Big Chiefs was their eighth consecutive of the season and left them languishing in the cellar of the loop. Three successive Bruno errors in the third frame provided the Boh’s with the trio of runs that they needed to sew up the game. Bill Sampson twirled a five-hitter for the Brewery Boys to earn the mound triumph. Sampson, Teddy Rock, Doug Lane, Andy Zwack and Chuck Carle all had two base blows for Prince Albert.

(July 4) A pitchers’ duel between Teddy Rock of Prince Albert and Saskatoon’s Bill Vogeli ended in a scoreless 0 – 0 draw after nine innings of N.B.L. action at Bohemian Park. Dahl gave up three hits and struck out 14 batters. Vogeli, of the undefeated Lions, whiffed four Bohemian batters but yielded only two hits. A spectacular catch in the bottom of the ninth inning by Abbey of the Leos saved a potential home run by Prince Albert’s Andy Zwack.

(July 7) Fading badly in the fifth and sixth innings, the Bruno Big Chiefs suffered their ninth successive loss of the N.B.L. campaign when they were pummelled 13 to 3 by the undefeated Saskatoon Lions. The Hub City nine picked up 15 hits off three Bruno chuckers with Roy Schappert and Ian Lowe leading the way for the Leos with three hits apiece. The Lions used a trio of hurlers with “Smokey” Johnson earning the win.

Prince Albert’s “Lefty” Logue cruised to the mound win by firing a four-hit shutout while recording five strikeouts. Loose fielding and six walks by Al “Lefty” Meyer of the Chiefs, coupled with timely Prince Albert hitting, led to Bruno’s downfall. Bohemian’s catcher Andy Zwack topped all hitters with a triple and two singles. Logue picked up a double and single.

(July 14) Reinie Kembel had the Prince Albert Bohemians eating out of his hand as he led the Saskatoon Lions to an easy 7 to 0 whitewashing over the visitors to Cairns Field. Andy Zwack of the Boh’s was credited with the only hit off Kembel when he singled off the glove of third sacker Ian “Ace” Lowe in leading off the second inning. Kembel fanned ten and did not issue a base on balls. Max Bentley played an outstanding game in the outfield for the Lions and also belted the game’s only four-bagger, a rousing clout that struck the telegraph wires well beyond the outfield fence. (July 14) The Bruno Big Chiefs recorded their initial victory in the Northern Baseball League when they outscored the Aberdeen nine by a 6 to 3 count. “Ace” Corbin pitched the entire game for Bruno, recording 14 strikeouts. (July 17) Failing to hit in the pinches, the Prince Albert Bohemians dropped a close 2 – 0 game to the Saskatoon Lions at Bohemian Park.The Lions picked up their first run in the third on two fielding miscues and a single by Max Bentley. Saskatoon outfielder Thompson singled in the seventh to drive in the insurance run. The Bohemians had plenty of chances to score but wound up stranding nine base runners. Bentley had two hits for the winners, both singles, while first sacker Doug Lane had a double and single for the Boh’s.

(July 18) Roy Schappert ’s clutch triple in bottom of the eighth inning drove in the tying and winning runs as the Saskatoon Lions kept their unblemished N.B.L. record in tact by slipping past Aberdeen 4 to 2 in a keenly contested match at Cairns Field. With two new pitchers on the roster, the Aberdonians gave the undefeated Lions all they could handle. Oakley Toombs of the Saskatonians led all hitters in this game with a trio of one-baggers. (July 20) In an N.B.L. fixture at Bruno, which had to be terminated after six innings because of both rain and darkness, the Saskatoon Lions chalked up their 11th consecutive victory in league play as they dropped the Big Chiefs by a 6 to 1 count. The winners scored all their runs in their first at-bat. “Smokey” Johnson got credit for the mound win, striking out seven along the way. N. Anderson of the Chiefs topped all hitters with three safeties.

(July 21) Bunching their hits in the third and seventh innings, the Prince Albert Bohemians took the measure of the Aberdeen club to the tune of 8 to 2. Dave “Lefty” Logue was on the hill for the winners and held the Aberdonians to three hits while striking out nine. Prince Albert shortstop Johnny Boden held the hot hand with the stick in this contest, going three for three at the dish including a two-bagger.

(July 31) Behind the steady hurling of Teddy Dahl, the Prince Albert Bohemians handed the mighty Saskatoon Lions their first defeat in N.B.L. play this season by recording a 2 to 0 win. Dahl limited the visitors to two hits and sent 12 Lion batsmen back to the bench via the strikeout route. The Brew Crew scored both of their counters in the bottom of the first frame. Catcher Andy Zwack was the top hitter of the evening, cracking out two singles, the first of which drove in Prince Albert’s first run.

(August 4) For only the second time this season, the Bruno Big Chiefs came out on top in an N.B.L. fixture as they blanked Aberdeen 3 to 0. Winner “Ace” Corbin tossed a three-hitter and struck out twelve to earn the shutout win. Even in defeat, Aberdeen’s chucker Hughie Crooks pitched admirably, surrendering six hits while fanning five. (August 6) The rich got richer and the poor got poorer. In the final two games of the 1939 N.B.L. regular season, the first-place Saskatoon Lions went on a batting spree as they pounded out two overwhelming victories against the outclassed Bruno Big Chiefs. The scores were 17 to 5 and 24 to 0. Although both games were played at Saskatoon’s Cairns Field, the opener was considered a home game for the Chiefs. “Lefty” Skarban picked up a brace of circuit clouts for the Leos in the double-dip. Eddie Major, Max Bentley and Roy Schappert all fattened their batting and power statistics in the one-sided contests.
The Lions collected a total of 15 hits off “Ace” Corbin in the matinee affair as “Slim” Burke cruised to an easy mound win.

(August 11) The Saskatoon Lions, behind the five-hit pitching of Reinie Kembel, defeated the Prince Albert Bohemians 8 to 3 in the opening game of the Northern Baseball League finals at Cairns Field.While Kembel was keeping the visitors’ hits well scattered while striking out 13 without issuing a base on balls, it was the timely hitting of Ian Lowe and Max Bentley that propelled the Leos to the triumph. Lowe carried off the batting honors for the Lions with a homer, double and single out of four trips to the plate. Bentley laced a single plus a two-run double in the fourth inning which put the Saskatonians ahead to stay. Losing hurler Bill Sampson gave up nine hits, struck out four and walked the same number. Charlie “Rusty” Crawford was the only Prince Albert swatter to nick Kembel for more than one hit, banging out a double and single in three official at-bats.

(August 12) Taking advantage of loose defensive play by Prince Albert in the opening frame, the Saskatoon Lions scored three times and never relinquished the lead as they slipped past the Bohemians 4 to 2 to take a two-game lead in the best-of-five series. Nine Saskatoon batters faced losing twirler Teddy Dahl in the top of the first inning as the Lions were benefactors of three Prince Albert errors and a wild pitch sandwiched around three Saskatoon hits and a base on balls.Dahl struck out seven and gave up eight hits. Winning moundsman Bill Vogeli surrendered seven safeties and retired seven batters via the strikeout route. Roy Schappert of the winners was the big hitter of the night with two singles and a double. Max Bentley turned in a stellar game in the outfield for the Lions, making two spectacular running catches of blasts that were earmarked for extra-bases.

(August 14) The Saskatoon Lions claimed the Northern Baseball League championship and the right to represent northern Saskatchewan in the provincial playoffs when the Prince Albert Bohemians failed to appear for the third game of the best-of-five series at Cairns Field. Finances were the reason offered by the Prince Albert club for their decision to forfeit the game and series. The Bohemian brass had also been upset that the Lions had used recently acquired Mel Ottem as their first baseman in the series as they argued that he was ineligible for playoff competition. The Bridge City squad will now play the southern champion Weyburn Beavers for the Saskatchewan crown.
SASKATCHEWAN SENIOR BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
(August 23) At Weyburn, the Saskatoon Lions took both games of a double-header, 4-1 and 3-2, to take a stranglehold on the Saskatchewan Senior baseball final series. They lead the best-of-five set, two games to none. A pair of country lads, Reinie Kembel of Wilkie and Bill Vogeli of Kenaston, hurled solid games to help the Lions to the twin triumph.
Kembel allowed just six hits in the opener, including a home run by Archie Wilder, and set down 12 via strikeout. He walked just one. Roy Schappert led the Lions at the plate with two doubles. Garnet Parsons had a double and single while Ian Lowe and Eddie Major added two singles apiece. For Weyburn, Les Wilder had a pair of two baggers.

In the second game, Vogeli fired a five-hitter, fanned 11 and helped with two hits as the Lions won 3-2. Roy Schappert 's 5th inning homer, with Vogeli aboard proved to be the winning blow. (August 25) Third baseman Ian Lowe led the offense with a pair of doubles and a single as the Saskatoon Lions downed Weyburn 9-3 to take the Saskatchewan Senior title in three straight games. Lowe also scored two runs, stole a base, and made the game's defensive play with a catch of a high fly ball near the third base grandstand. Centre fielder Max Bentley, second baseman Roy Schappert and shortstop Eddie Major each added two safeties for the Lions. Saskatoon had 12 hits overall and were helped by six Weyburn errors. Reliever Bill Vogeli picked up the win.

(August 26) Saskatoon and Weyburn divided an exhibition doubleheader at Saskatoon. The hosts romped to an 11-2 win in the opener, and the Beavers trounced the Lions 9-1 in the evening game. Saskatoon backed up Reinie Kembel's seven-hit pitching with a 15-hit attack in taking the first game. Archie Wilder belted a homer for the losers.

(August 27) Weyburn and Saskatoon split another exhibition double-header, Lions winning the opener 8-7, Beavers taking the second game 4-3. Eddie Major, the Lions' shortstop, took to the hill and survived a late rally by the Beavers to take the win. After six shutout innings, Weyburn erupted for four in the 7th, two in the 8th and another in the top of the 9th to tie. However, in the bottom of the 9th, Major knocked in the winning run with a two-out single to right. Bobby Stark had a homer for Saskatoon.

In his third game in three days, Art Walter held Saskatoon to six hits as the Beavers took the nightcap 4-3. Lefty Skarban took the loss.

SASKATCHEWAN JUNIOR BASEBALL
(September 4) Melville Millionaires beat Colonsay in two straight games Monday to win the Saskatchewan Junior Baseball championship. Bud Curry was a standout for the winners pitching in both games as Melville romped to a 15-4 victory in the first game then just nipped Colonsay 3-2 in the second.
In the afternoon, Curry was headed for a shutout, leading 13-0, when Pilak took over in the eighth. But, after allowing three hits and a walk for one run, Curry was recalled with the bases full. He fanned 13, hurling no-hit ball for seven of the nine innings. Millionaires collected eleven hits off Folk and Zeleschuk.
Curry relieved in the ninth inning of the second contest to preserve the win for Clerkson who allowed five hits over eight frames.
(In January, 1940 the Regina Leader-Post reported Curry had a 24-1 record in 1939). He joined the RCAF in January, 1940 and served until 1945.
