The new Saskatoon Legion squad got off to a flying start in the
inaugural game of the 1947 Saskatoon & District Baseball League when
they hammered last season's champions, the Saskatoon Army & Navy
Veterans, 9 - 0. This opening game was far from being a brilliant one as
the Legion nine took advantage of the loose fielding display by their
intra-city rivals to pretty well have things their own way. Johnny
Yaroscho tossed a complete game eight-hitter to earn the win. Loser
Johnny Grossman and reliever Walt Vandale
were nicked for a dozen bingles, including doubles off the bats of
Dick Piper, Lowell Hanson and Jack
Chapman.

Ray Hamilton's three-RBI triple in the opening frame
sparked the Saskatoon Cubs to a 4 - 1 victory over their newly-formed
city cousins, the Saskatoon Legion. Eric Falk went all the
way on the hill for the Cubs, limiting the Legion boys to seven well
scattered hits, in picking up the win. The trio of "Lefty"
Hornyak, southpaw Jack Chapman and "Swede"
Nordstrom handled hurling chores for the Legion, surrendering but
four hits to the winners. Chapman fared the best fanning eight of the 10
men to face him in three frames. Hornyak took the loss. Arnold
Johnson had a bases-empty homer for the Cubbies. Nordstrom's 7th
inning double drove in the lone Legion marker.

The Colonsay Monarchs made their debut in the Saskatoon & District
Baseball League an auspicious one as they tamed the Army & Navy Veterans
6 - 3 in a darkness-shortened, 7-inning game at Cairns Field. The
Colonsay crew managed only six hits but bunched them effectively to
provide chucker "Slim" Madden with enough of a cushion for
the mound win. Madden held the Vets to five hits in taking the decision
over Walt Vandale. Alex Ruhl of the Vets had
the game's only extra-base hit, a double in the 7th inning.

Weather and diamond conditions failed to prevent the Delisle Commodores
of the Saskatoon & District Baseball League and the Carrot River Loggers
from presenting one of the best exhibition games seen in many years. At
the end of nine innings played on a greasy diamond and in chilly
weather, the Delisle contingent came out on top by a razor-thin 1 - 0
margin. The Goose Lakers, with five Bentleys in the line-up and
twirler John "Smiley" Maroniuk in mid-season form,
chased the game's only run across the plate in the 3rd frame on Max
Bentley's two-out single. Maroniuk fanned 13 Loggers while
allowing three hits. Carrot River's portsider Minnie Minish
gave up 10 Delisle safeties in taking the loss. Dick Brown
was the Commodores' best batsman with a double and two singles. Maroniuk
picked up a brace of singles. Bobby Stark had a two-bagger
for the Loggers.

The Legion baseballers ran up against too much solid pitching at Cairns
Field and the Delisle crew packed away a soft 9 - 2 victory before the
season's top crowd. The Legionnaires put on a weak defensive display as
the visitors had no trouble in packing away their win. Johnny
Maroniuk earned the mound win with a stellar 7 1/3 innings of relief
work in which he struck out 11 and gave up but one hit. The game's only
extra-base hit was a double by Delisle's Reg Bentley.

The North Battleford Beavers got their first taste of Saskatoon &
District Baseball League action when they travelled to Delisle for a
double-bill. The Goose Lake homesters took the matinee game 4 - 3 in 10
innings while the second encounter was another 10-frame tussle which
ended in a 1 - 1 draw as darkness prevented further play.
The
Beavers held a 3 - 0 lead in the opener after six innings. Delisle came
back with two counters in the 7th and, then, tied the game in the 8th
when the base umpire failed to catch a "hidden ball" out which
eventually allowed the runner to score. The Commodores winning marker
came around in the bottom of the first extra-frame.

The
evening game was scoreless after the regulation nine innings. In the
10th, both teams scored once but couldn't play any further with darkness
enveloping the skies. Don Leask, Roy Dean

Battleford.

The visiting Colonsay Monarchs shaded the Saskatoon Veterans 5 - 4 as "Slim"
Madden decisioned Johnny Grossman on the mound.
Although the Vets out-hit the visitors 9 to 5, Colonsay was able to
bunch their hits more effectively. Both chuckers went the route and each
fanned eight opposing batters. Len McPhail of the Vets had
a two-bagger which turned out to be the only extra-base hit of the
match.

The Saskatoon Cubs dropped the Colonsay Monarchs 9 - 5 before a huge
Cairns Field audience. The Monarchs appeared headed for their second
Cairns Field victory on successive days and held a 3 - 1 lead heading
into the bottom of the 6th. It was then, however, that the Cubs' bats
started to click and five hits, three walks and a pair of errors
produced eight big counters for the homesters and the ball game to boot.
Jerry Webster and Alex Sirota of the Baby
Bears both had doubles in support of winning hurler Eric Falk.
Loser Johnny Folk whiffed 11 Cubs.

The Delisle Commodores picked up another baseball victory at Cairns
Field, defeating the Saskatoon Army & Navy Veterans 5 - 1 in what turned
out to be one of the best games to date in the Saskatoon & District
circuit. For five innings, Vets' twirler Ted Atkinson held
the powerful hitting visitors hitless and scoreless. Entering the top of
the 6th in a scoreless draw, the Commodores finally broke the stalemate
by plating a trio of runs. Winning hurler Reinie Kimball
drove in one of those with a sharp single. Kimball also doubled in the
8th, the only extra-base hit produced in this battle.

There was plenty of heavy hitting at Cairns Field as the Saskatoon Cubs
out-slugged their city rivals, the Saskatoon Legion, by a score of 10 -
9. Legionnaire outfielder Ed Nalywako provided the biggest
power display by slugging a pair of mammoth home runs off veteran "Ace"
Corbin. From the dugout on the other side of the diamond stepped
Art Dehmke and Alex Sirota of the Cubbies
who both blasted triples. The Cubs never trailed after opening the game

out-hit their city cousins 11 to 6 in support of winning twirler
Johnny Grossman who fanned seven and did not allow an earned

Battleford Beavers picked up a 10 - 5 victory over the Saskatoon Army,

for the visitors and evened their record at a win and a loss. The
Beavers sent Saskatoon starter and loser Ted Atkinson to
the showers in the 3rd frame and coasted to victory from there behind
Ross "Lefty" Arnold's eight-hitter. There was only a

The Army, Navy & Airforce Veterans of Saskatoon took another lacing at
Cairns Field as the Saskatoon Cubs pummeled them 12 - 2. The Cubs jumped

two innings of the game. Loser Johnny Grossman struck out
10 batters but had to endure the pain of eight defensive miscues by his
defense. Of the 13 hits garnered by the Cubs, five went for extra-bases

pitcher.

The Saskatoon Legion baseball club introduced their new negro pitcher,
Jack Matchett, to a full house of Saskatoon fans and the
colored boy's initiation was both good and bad. It was bad due to the
fact that the Saskatoon Cubs beat him 8 - 7 in an interesting 11-inning
battle but it was decidedly good to see the big boy whale out three hits
in four trips, two of them healthy triples. Matchett also scored two
runs, accepted seven fielding chances perfectly and struck out six Cubs.

District Baseball League and lengthened their lead to 2 1/2 games by
taking both ends of a doubleheader from the North Battleford Beavers by
1 - 0 and 17 - 10 counts. Both teams dished up excellent baseball in the
matinee encounter as a pitching battle developed between Reinie
Kimball of Delisle and George Taylor of the
Beavers. Taylor was tagged for fewer hits but Max Bentley's

moved past the Saskatoon Cubs into 3rd spot in the standings. Ivan
Krook clouted a homer for the Legion in the 1st inning but that
lead evaporated quickly as the Monarchs roared back with three counters
in the bottom of the frame and they never trailed after that. Cal
Mills of the Legionnaires and Colonsay's Hawrysh had
triples in this contest.

17) The high-flying Colonsay Monarchs dumped the Saskatoon Legion for
the second day in a row, this time by a 5 - 1 margin. The win propelled
the Monarchs into a 2nd place tie with the North Battleford Beavers in
the final standings. Ed Nalywako had a booming home run
and a double for the winners. Ivan Krook's triple was the
longest blow for the Hub City bunch.

PLAYOFFS
(August 19) The Delisle Commodores crowded every one of their five hits
and four runs into the 1st inning to defeat the Saskatoon Cubs 4 - 2 in
the first game of their Saskatoon & District Baseball League best-of-3
semi-final series. The Cubs equaled Delisle's output of five hits as
Johnny Maroniuk picked up the mound victory over the Cubs'
Johnny Grossman. Only one batter, Ray Hamilton
of the Baby Bears, had two hits in this game.

21) Two unearned runs in the "lucky 7th", both driven across the plate
by pinch-hitter Don Grant, gave the North Battleford
Beavers a 2 - 1 victory over the Colonsay Monarchs in the opener of
their play-off series. 20 year old Lorne Cooke, a North
Battleford playoff recruit, handcuffed the Monarchs on three hits, all
singles, in earning the win on the hill. Loser Johnny Folk
surrendered but five singles but a pair of 7th inning errors by his
mates erased a 1 - 0 lead and led to his demise.

(August
24) The Delisle Commodores rode into the Saskatoon & District Baseball
League finals on the strength of a fine pitching effort by Murray
Coben and the equally effective stick work by Max
Bentley. The Commodores defeated the Saskatoon Cubs 4 - 0 to take
the best-2-out-of-3 semi-final series with two straight wins. Coben, an
easy-going left hander, limited the Cubbies to three hits and struck out
11. Loser Stan Currie, another portsider, was relatively
effective in defeat. He struck out a dozen Delisle batters and kept the
rest down to six hits, three of them off the bat of Max
Bentley.

(September
1) The North Battleford Beavers played heads up ball to take both ends
of a Labor Day play-off doubleheader from the Delisle Commodores by
scores of 8 - 5 and 5 - 4. The brace of wins gives them a two-game lead
in their best-of-five final series for the Saskatoon & District Baseball
League championship.
In the
afternoon contest, the Commodores had things their own way for 4 1/2
innings and had a 4 - 0 advantage entering the bottom of the 5th. The
Beavers came to life in the 6th to score four counters and knot the
count. The Commodores went one up on a 7th inning squeeze play but then
three errors in the 8th plus two walks and a pair of hits off loser
Bert Olmstead iced the game for the Beavers. Doug
Bentley slugged a bases-empty dinger for Delisle.

The
Beavers out-hit the visiting Goose Liners in the second game by a 10 to
6 margin. "Lefty" Arnold, with six strikeouts, got the
win. Loser Murray Coben fanned nine before relinquishing
mound chores to Max Bentley. Elton Dean and
Pete Prediger collected doubles for the winners while
Doug Bentley of Delisle also had a two-bagger.

3) After a double defeat in North Battleford on Labor Day, the Delisle
Commodores returned to their home diamond and found the change in venue
to their liking as the classy Goose Liners defeated the Beavers 9 - 3
and 8 - 1 to deadlock the Saskatoon & District Baseball League final at
two games each. North Battleford lodged an official protest on the
grounds that Johnny Gibson and Alex Uffleman,
recent Delisle acquisitions from Calgary, were ineligible.
Gibson, a smooth-working right hander, held the Beavers to eight
scattered singles and fanned six in the afternoon tussle. Uffleman,
Gibson, Max Bentley and Reg Bentley all had
two hits for the winners

Errors
were mainly responsible for the Beavers downfall in the nightcap. Losing
pitcher George Taylor was given wretched defensive support
while holding the Commodores to four hits, two less than collected by
his teammates of winning pitcher John Maroniuk. Delisle's
Max Bentley had a pair of doubles to lead all swatters.
Pete Prediger of North Battleford and Bev Bentley
of the Commodores both had a brace of singles.

(September
5) Protests entered by both North Battleford and Delisle following a
playoff doubleheader at Delisle were disallowed by a protest committee.
The 5th and final playoff game is scheduled for Cairns Field on Sunday,
September 7.
(September
7) Johnny Maroniuk, southpaw heaver of the Delisle
Commodores, manufactured a three-hit shut-out performance for himself
and, as a result, the Commodores are 1947 champions of the Saskatoon &
District Baseball League. The Delisle boys defeated the North Battleford
Beavers 2 - 0 to win the deciding game in the best-of-five final series.
After six complete innings, the game was scoreless as Maroniuk and North
Battleford's Lorne Cooke were locked into a serious mound
joust. Cooke gave up a pair of 7th inning singles and two walks which
forced in a run to give the Commodores a 1 - 0 lead. In the 8th, Bev
Bentley's single drove in a 2nd run and sent Cooke to the
showers. Max Bentley had a double and single to lead
hitters on both squads.
