Semi-Finals:
(August 29) Lyman
Bostock laced a based-loaded single in the bottom of the 9th
to score two runs and give Winnipeg Buffaloes a 3-2 win over
Minot Mallards in the opening game of their best-of-five
semi-final series before 4-thousand fans at Osborne Stadium. Bostock
also drove in the first Buffaloes' run with a single in the 4th
inning. Leon Day tossed a five-hitter for
the win.

(August 30) Skeeter Watkins
stole home with the winning run as Brandon Greys shaded Carman
Cardinals 2-1 in the opening game of their semi-final series at Brandon. Cardinals scored both
their runs in the 3rd
inning. Gerry MacKay led off with a single
and moved to second on Art Hunt's sacrifice.
MacKay scored on Ron Teasley's wild throw
to first on Watkin's ground ball. Watkin's raced to
second on another error and moved to third on an infield
out. He made a clean theft of home on a 2-1 count on Ramon
Rodriguez. Almer McKerlie knocked in
the lone Cards run with a single in the 9th. Gentry
Jessup was the loser in spite of holding the Cards to two
hits. He fanned eleven and walked six. Hunt
gave up just three hits, struck out six and walked two.

(August 31) Lillord Cobb
pitched and batted Carman to a 6-3 win over Brandon to tie
their semi-final series at a game apiece. Cobb held the
Greys to nine hits while blasting a two-run homer and a
single. Ron Teasley and Sonny Andrews
each had three hits for the Cardinals as did Armando Vasquez
for the Greys. 35-hundred fans watched the action at Carman
Park.

(August 31) Winnipeg
bounced back with five runs in the last two innings to top the
Mallards 6-5 in Minot. Butch Davis' 9th
inning triple scored Sam Hill with the winning
run. Buffaloes scored four runs in the 8th to tie the
contest 5-5. Hill doubled, Davis singled and Leon Day
and Lyman Bostock each poked doubles. Two wild pitches allowed Bostock to cross
the plate with the tying run. Jim Newberry
fanned the side in the bottom of the 9th and picked up the win.

(September 1) 18-year-old Pedro
Naranjo was the hero for Brandon as the Greys dumped
Carman 8-2 before 35-hundred fans at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium at
Brandon. The young Cuban set the Cardinals down on five
hits and belted out three safeties to lead the Greys to the
win. His bases-loaded double in the 4th inning drove in
three runs. He added a triple and a single. Ian
Lowe, manager of the Greys, also had three hits.

(September 2) Winnipeg
whipped Minot 11-3 to sweep their semi-final series in three
straight games. Buffaloes pounded out 15 hits including
homers from Joe Taylor, Lyman Bostock
and Frazier Robinson. Taylor knocked in four
runs with his homer, double and a single. Jim Newberry
went the distance for the win scattering eight hits. He
fanned seven and walked only one.

(September 2) Carman
Cardinals forced a deciding game in their playoff series by
edging Brandon 4-3 before 3-thousand fans in Carman. Gentry
Jessup tossed a seven-hitter to pick up the win. Ron
Teasley had three hits for the Cards. The game was held
up in the 5th inning as Carman disputed a decision to give Teasley
a double rather than a homer on a blast over the head of
Greys' right fielder Charles Peete. Umpires
ruled that the ball had hit the ground behind Peete and bounced
over the fence. Cards played the contest under
protest.

(September 4) Art Hunt
pitched a six-hit shutout as Brandon whipped Carman 7-0 before
5-thousand fans in the
deciding game of their semi-final series. It was the 11th
straight victory for Hunt since he joined the Greys in early
July. Brandon scored a pair of runs in the 1st inning on Rafe
Cabrera's double and it proved to be all they
needed.

Final Series:
(September 6) In a 13-inning contest which produced 26
hits, 15 errors, and three ejections, the Winnipeg Buffaloes
came away with a 9-7 win over Brandon in the opening game of the Mandak
League's final series.
A single and two errors in the
13th gave the Buffaloes two runs and the victory. Frazier
Robinson drove in three runs for the Buffs with a triple
and a single. Lyman Bostock scored twice and
batted in two runs with a triple and single. Rafe
Cabrera and Charlie Peete each had three
hits for the Greys. Jim Newberry was the
winner in relief.

Naranjo, Gibbons (L) (7) and Rodriguez
(September 7) Winnipeg blew
a five-run lead then came back with two runs in the 8th to edge
Brandon 7-6 to take a two-game lead in their final series. Lyman
Bostock led off the inning with a double and scored on Leon
Days' two-bagger to left. Joe Taylor's single
drove in Day with the winning marker. Jim
Newberry came on in relief to shutdown the Greys after
the home club had exploded for six runs in the sixth
inning. Newberry allowed just one hit over four innings of
work to pick up his second win in two nights. Bostock and Sam
Hill each had three hits for the Buffaloes. Rafe
Cabrera drove in three runs for the Greys with a
bases-loaded double in the 6th. Buffs handed Brandon ace Art
Hunt his first loss of the season.

(September 8) For the third
straight night, Jim Newberry stopped Brandon in a
relief role as Winnipeg dumped the Greys 8-2 to move to within
one game of the Mandak League title. Newberry came on for
starter Andy Porter in the 6th with two runs in,
two runners on base and just one out. Newberry allowed but
one scratch infield hit and fanned five over the last 3 2/3s
innings. A three-run 4th inning proved to be enough for
the Buffaloes. Leon Day, Lyman Bostock
and Chuck Wilson each drove in two runs for
Winnipeg. Wilson had the game's only homer.
5-thousand fans watched the action at Osborne Stadium.

(September 13) Brandon
erased a 2-0 deficit with a four-run 3rd inning and held on to
top Winnipeg Buffaloes 7-3 to keep alive their hopes of the
Mandak League championship. Buffaloes lead the series 3
games to 1. Greys scored their four markers on an infield
hit, three walks and an error. Dirk Gibbons
allowed just two hits in four innings of relief to shutdown the
powerful Buffaloes' attack. Ian Lowe had two
hits and drove in a pair for the Greys.

Smith (L), Porter (3), Carter (9) and Robinson
(September 14) In a
thrilling windup to the first year of Mandak League play,
Winnipeg captured the league championship with a 1-0, 17-inning
victory over Brandon as the Buffaloes' Leon Day
and the Greys' Manuel Godinez staged a brilliant
pitching duel. Day pitched a six-hitter in going the
distance while Godinez scattered nine hits. Day fanned
eight and walked six. Godinez had only three strikeouts
but didn't walk a single batter through the full 17
innings.
Joe Taylor's single
drove in Butch Davis with the game's only
run. Winnipeg second baseman Johnny Kennedy
made a sparkling play in the 14th inning to throw out Gerry
MacKay at the plate to save the contest for the
Buffaloes. Brandon had the bases loaded in the 8th inning
with just one out but failed to score. Buffs manager Willie
Wells Sr. was ejected in the 10th inning and a
police escort was called when the Winnipeg pilot refused to
leave the field. However, when umpire-in-chief Mark
Van Buren threatened to forfeit the game to the
Greys, Wells left voluntarily.
More than 25-hundred fans were on
hand for the finale in Brandon.
