(March 28) Minot Mallards announced
the signing of Wilfred "Lefty" Lefebvre to manage the
city's entry in the ManDak League. He's expected to arrive in mid-June
after completion of his college coaching duties at Brown University.
Lefebvre is a former major league pitcher with the Boston Red Sox and
Washington Senators and with Minneapolis and Louisville of the American Association.
The Mallards also announced agreement with Everette
Faunce, who will coach the Minot Teachers college football
team. Former Merchants in the fold include shortstop Zoonie McLean,
second baseman Del Triplet, catcher Cliff Kempf,
pitcher-outfielder Joe Hofele, and pitcher Brad Tolson.
Others signed by the Mallards are Ted Fowler, a utilityman and
school-mate of Tolson's at the University of Arizona, and Marly Strong
of Fargo who caught in the minors in 1948 and 1949.
The club plans to play about 110 games,
including 50 in the ManDak League.
(May 20) The scheduled openers in the new
loop were postponed as residents continued to deal with the aftermath of the
Manitoba floods.
(May 23) Minot Mallards were scheduled
to make their 1950 debut in an exhibition game at Regina against the
Caps. On Thursday (May 25) the club was set for another exhibition at
Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
(May 24) More than 3-thousand fans
watched the season opener in Brandon as Frank Watkins tossed a
three-hitter and the Greys demolished Minot Mallards, 12-1. Brandon
had just nine hits but took advantage of eight walks and seven Minot
errors. Rafe Cabrera and Manuel Godinez
each drove in three runs for the Greys. Jimmy Peete,
17-year-old southpaw, started for the Mallards but was replaced after three
innings by Lester Witherspoon. Playing-manager Ian
Lowe had a triple and single for the winners. Ted Strong had the
only extra base hit for the Mallards, a triple, but was thrown out at the
plate in trying to stretch the blow into an inside-the-park homer. Marley Strong,
in centre field for the Mallards, made the fielding gem of the game when he
scampered into deep left field and made a diving catch on Lowe's long drive
in the fifth inning.

(May 24) In a thriller before
2-thousand opening day fans in Carman, Elmwood Giants pulled out a 4-2, 10
inning victory over the Cardinals. A single by Willie Wells Jr.
scored the winner. Bill Antoniak's sac fly notched an
insurance run. Cardinals had tied in the bottom of the 9th. Taylor
Smith held Carman to five hits in picking up the win. He
registered 13 strikeouts.

Brandon to a 7-2 win over Carman. Ramon Rodriguez' two-run
double was a key hit in the inning. Dirk Gibbons went the

exhibition action, the Minot Mallards dropped a 16-11 slugfest to the
Detroit Lakes Lakers. Len Williams paced the Mallards with four

Minneapolis Miller, starter on the hill for the home club. Jim

(May 26) Winnipeg Buffaloes made
their ManDak debut a winning one as they handed Carman its third straight
setback by scoring a 12-6 victory although outhit, 14-10. Buffaloes
erupted with eight runs in the 4th inning to secure the win. Cards'
starting pitcher Clint McKerlie gave up three walks, hit one batter
and was tagged for a double by Lyman Bostock before being
relieved by Robert Manning. Another two runs scored on a
throwing error. Joe Taylor had a homer for the
Buffaloes and Graves replied for Carman.

(May 27) A dropped third strike in the
9th inning enabled Brandon to come from behind to edge Winnipeg 6-5 in its
home opener before 5,421 fans. Buffaloes' Taylor Smith had been
breezing along with a 5-3 lead going in the final frame. With one run
in and two out, Gerry MacKay swung wildly at a sweeping curve and
Smith appeared to have another victory. But the ball bounded out of Percy
Howard's glove and rolled to the backstop. MacKay beat the throw
to first as the tying run crossed the plate. Chuck Wilson's
single then drove in the winner. Winslow Means picked up the
pitching victory in a relief role. Smith fanned fourteen in a losing
cause. Johnny Britton, of Winnipeg, was the game's top hitter with
three safeties including a homer. Taylor Smith fanned 14
in a losing cause. It brought his total to 27 in two games.

runs in the 8th inning to tie and notched the winner in the 9th to down
Carman 9-8. Reliever Andy Anderson knocked in the winning
run with a two-out single in the 9th. Satchel Paige tossed
three shutout innings in the start for the Mallards. Anderson picked
up the win with 4 2/3s shutout innings in relief. Second baseman
Len Williams led the winners with two hits, one a homer, and
three runs scored. Bob Johnson had the big bat for the Cardinals
driving in four runs with two doubles and a single.

who played the outfield and drove in three runs with a homer and two
singles. Ted Strong knocked in three with a triple, two doubles
and a single. Satchel Paige reached on a fielders' choice as a
pinch hitter and scored a run. He finished the game in left field.

of a double-header at Minot. Paige fanned seven and allowed only a scratch

drove in runs in the 4th inning to provide the Mallards with enough for the
win. It was the
first loss in six games for the Greys who won the opener, 9-6, with a
fifteen hit attack. Rafe Cabrera had four hits for the
Greys and Gerry MacKay added three. Brandon's Chuck
Wilson had a pair in the second game after a three-hit effort in the
opener.

play. The Mallards then broke loose against relievers Ernie
Carter and Cy Snead to salt away the victory.
Ev Faunce knocked in five runs for Minot with a pair of

with a homer and a double.

three-hitter, surviving a five-run inning, as Elmwood Giants whipped
Winnipeg Buffaloes 13-5. With the exception of the 6th inning,
when the Buffaloes turned a bad-hop triple, a double, three walks and
three errors into five runs, Jones was in firm command. The Giants
pounded out eighty extra base hits with Jack Warwick's
two-run homer the big blow. Solly Drake drove in
three runs with a double and triple.

southpaw Jimmy Peete led Minot to a 5-4 win over Brandon.

errors to hand the Greys their first home loss of the season. Peete fanned eleven and walked four. Norm Felde again was the
top hitter for Minot with two hits and he scored the Mallards' first two
runs.

poked solo homers in a losing cause for the Free Press squad. Lillord
Cobb, who went the first four innings for the Trib team, received
credit for the win.

straight defeat, 12-6 in a game at Winnipeg. A six-run 5th inning
carried Elmwood to the win. Giants had just nine hits, but took
advantage of six Carman errors. Jack Warwick knocked in two
runs for Elmwood with a triple and a single. Cards' Ron Teasley
was the offensive star with a pair of home runs and four runs batted in.
The Carman executive began to make changes, firing
manager Charlie (Red) House, outfielders Bob Malone
and Bob Manning and pitcher Don Bass.
Ed Novak, who handled the Carman club at the end of last
season, is expected to take over as manager.

(June 14) Elmwood Giants used a suicide
squeeze in the bottom of the 9th inning to plate the winning marker in a
5-4 decision over Minot Mallards. With pinch-runner Paul
Jones roaring in from third base, Martin Crue laid
down a perfect bunt to drive in the winner. Jones was running for
Marshall Boney who had reached on a fielders' choice and
advanced to third on Hickey Redd's single. Bob
Cunningham picked up the win in relief. Solly Drake had

relief of starter Mario Chacon, picked up the win. Bob
Danielson, the Mallards' new first sacker, had the only homer.

for an exhibition match against the Northern Senior League club. Cards
pulled out a 6-3 victory before more than 400 fans.
(June 19) Minot dropped its 5th in a
row as Winnipeg's Andy Porter fired a three-hitter as the Buffaloes
scored a 9-1 win at Minot. Winnipeg broke a scoreless tie in the 6th
with a four-run outburst which featured a two-run triple by John Britton
and a Butch Davis homer.

singles, two errors and a passed ball in the 9th to steal the win.

runs in the 4th inning when Ron Teasley tripled in Jack

A bases-loaded triple by Gerry MacKay in the 4th

blasted a three-run homer in the 7th inning to give Carman a 4-3 win over
Winnipeg Buffaloes. With the Cardinals trailing 2-1, Jessup's towering
drive over the centre field wall scored Almer McKerlie and Bob
Johnson in front of him. Butch Davis led the
Buffs with three hits and three stolen bases.

victory at Carman to spoil ceremonies marking the inauguration of the
floodlights for the Carman ball park. Premier D.L. Campbell pulled
the switch to turn on the lights for the first time. The hometown
Cardinals scored three in the 2nd inning to erase an early 1-0 Brandon
lead. But the Greys exploded for five runs in the 5th inning and
another pair in the 6th to put the game out of reach. Ian Lowe
and Charlie Peete each had three hits for the Greys. Dirk

Drake put on a show as Elmwood Giants shaded Winnipeg Buffaloes 4-3.
Drake's single to right in the 9th inning drove in Red Longley with
the winning run after his third inning single had driven in the game's first
run. Drake had scored the Giants second tally in the 6th inning after
reaching on a bunt single. The fleet-footed Drake made five putouts
including a sensation stab in the 7th inning that robbed John Kennedy
of at least a double. Racing to the bleachers in centre, Drake leapt
to make a back-handed catch and held on to the ball as he tumbled head over
heels into the stands. Reliever Paul Jones picked up the win.
The Buffaloes blew a chance to sew up the contest in the top of the 9th as
they loaded the bases with two out and had Butch Davis the league's
leading hitter at the plate. However, Sam Hill tried to steal
home and was thrown out to end the threat.

place in the ManDak League standings with a thrilling 7-6 win over the Winnipeg
Buffaloes. Greys built up a 7-3 lead then had to hang on as
the Buffs scored three in the bottom of the 9th and had the bases loaded
with just one out. Catcher Ramon Rodriguez picked off Joe
Taylor at second base and Pedro Naranjo fanned John
Kennedy to end the threat. Rafe Cabrera had a
three-run homer for the Greys, while Butch Davis and Lyman
Bostock homered for the Buffs.

Sr. knocked in four runs with a pair of doubles, while John Kennedy,
Johnny Britton and Taylor Smith each had three

Davis dropped 71 percentage points in two weeks but continued to lead
ManDak League hitters with a .554 mark. Davis also led in runs and

was second in stolen bases. Harvey Lapides, newly
acquired outfielder for Minot, was second with an even .400 although he had
just fifteen at bats. Rafe Cabrera of Brandon held third
place with .389 and topped the circuit in runs batted in. Rounding out
the top five were Jack Schaefer of Carman at .378 and Lyman
Bostock of Winnipeg with a .360 average.

and raced all the way home on an error in the bottom of the 9th inning to
give Brandon a 4-3 win over Elmwood and first place in the ManDak
standings. Vasquez' sharp single got by right fielder Marshall Boney
and rolled to the wall. Art Hunt picked up the win in a
tense pitching duel with the Giants' Al Preston.

In one of the best pitching duels of the season, Bob Danielson
bested Paul Jones as Minot shaded Elmwood 3-1 in 14 innings.
Danielson went the distance, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks while fanning
15 and scored the winning run after belting a double to open the 14th
inning. Jones pitched into the 14th inning holding the Mallards to eight
hits. Zoonie McLean had three hits for the winners, Cy
Snead belted three for the Giants.

Even with a new manager, Cy Snead, and a revised batting
lineup, the Giants couldn't change their losing ways. A double
by Willie Wells Sr. in the 3rd inning scored two for
the Buffs and proved to be enough for the win.

when he crossed the plate on Bus Vasquez' single. Charlie
Peete double plated Vasquez with an insurance run.

thriller at Minot. Lowe had led off with a single and moved to third

winner. Greys had just seven hits, two by Lowe. Lefty Lefebvre
had three hits for the Mallards. Manuel Godinez picked

(August 3) Carman Cardinals crept out
of the league cellar with a 3-2 win over Elmwood. Cards, who dropped
ten straight games at the start of the season, moved into fourth place ahead
of the Giants. A crowd of 15-hundred watched a pitching duel between Johnnie
Wingo of the Cards and Cy Snead of Elmwood. Each gave up
just seven hits. Wingo was the batting star, driving in the
winning run in the 7th inning.

(August 4) With 49 hits in 104 at
bats, Butch Davis of Winnipeg maintained his lead atop the ManDak
League batting race with a .471 average. Carman's Jack Schaefer
moved into second spot, with a .391 mark. Cowan Hyde of
Elmwood was third at .358. Brandon's Rafe Cabrera held fourth
spot, at .348, and topped the loop in homers, with five, and runs batted in,
with 29. With a .346 average, Willie Wells Sr. of
Winnipeg was fifth.
(August 4) In a game which
featured a brilliant pitching duel, Brandon scored on a wild pitch in the
13th inning to register a 1-0 win over Carman. Skeeter Watkins
scored from third when Lillord Cobb bounced a pitch off the
plate high over the head of catcher Almer McKerlie. Cobb
and Pedro Naranjo hooked up in a classic. Naranjo
pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts while Cobb allowed seven hits and
fanned five.

had a no-hitter into the 8th inning as Winnipeg Buffaloes beat Elmwood
6-2. Smith gave up three hits after he got the first two outs in the
8th. He finished with a four-hitter, seven strikeouts and two
walks. Buffs took advantage of seven Giants' errors. Butch
Davis had three hits for the winners.

(August 5) Minot Mallards took advantage of
nine walks and six errors to shade Carman 5-4 in 10 innings in the first
game of a weekend doubleheader. With the exception of a four-run
7th inning, Bob Danielson was firmly in control, allowing seven hits
overall. He had 13 strikeouts. Fittingly, Gentry Jessup walked
in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Cards had a golden
opportunity to put the game out of reach in the top of the 9th when they
loaded the bases with none out. However, an infield play resulted in
an out at home and Harvey Lapides made an outstanding throw to nab Almer
McKerlie at the plate after grabbing Gord Elliott's outfield fly.

(August 5) Elmwood Giants took a pair
from Winnipeg Buffaloes 11-6 and 11-10. Lefty Ray FInch was
the star of the opener pitching an eight-hitter and driving in three
runs with a double and single. Cowan Hyde, with three
hits, was the difference in the nightcap. With the score tied
10-10 in the bottom of the 9th inning, Hyde singled, was sacrificed to
second, stole third and came around to score the winner when the attempt
to nail him at third sailed into left field. Solly Drake
also had three hits for the Giants and Pat Patterson had the
game's only homer. Johnny Britton had a triple and two
doubles for the Buffaloes. Paul Jones went all the way for the
win.

over Elmwood. Three players were suspended following alleged bean ball

sidelines. Rodriguez led the Brandon offense driving in seven
runs with a homer, double and single. Cabrera, Ian Lowe
and Chuck Wilson each had three hits.

10) Carman Cardinals sit just a half-game out of fourth place in the
ManDak League following a 5-4, 10 inning win over Winnipeg Buffaloes.
Carman overcame a 4-1 deficit with a pair of runs in the 7th inning, the
tying run in the bottom of the 9th and the winner with two out in the 10th
inning. Johnny Wingo drove in Almer McKerlie with the deciding marker.

as Minot Mallards tagged Elmwood Giants with a 6-1 defeat. Cathey
spaced out eight hits to take the pitching victory and was the big gun
at the plate driving in four runs, including a bases-clearing double in
the 4th inning. Playing-manager Cy Snead went the distance
on the hill for the Giants.

exhibition double-header with Roblin at Benito Beach. Brandon won the
opener 4-2, but dropped the second game 4-3. Frank Watkins won
the mound decision over Dick Vinson in the first contest,

on the mound, for the second game.
(August 14) Leon Day
tossed a three-hit gem as Winnipeg Buffaloes shutout Minot 9-0. Day
faced just 30 batters. He fanned eleven and allowed just a single
walk. Day also drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double in the 5th
inning. Butch Davis had three hits for the Buffaloes.

their 11th straight victory downing Elmwood 6-2 behind the eight-hit
pitching of Art Hunt. Ian Lowe and Chuck
Wilson led the Greys offense each with three hits. It was
Hunt's seventh consecutive league victory without a loss.

(August 15) Winnipeg's
sensational Butch Davis, with a lofty .472 average continued to pace
the hitters in the ManDak League. Davis was nearly a hundred points
ahead of the runner-up, Rafe Cabrera of Brandon who increased
his mark to .374. Rounding out the top five were Cowan Hyde
of Elmwood at .349, Jack Schaefer of Carman at .339 and Joe
Wiley of the Giants at .328. A 13 for 25 spurt moved Brandon's
playing-manager Ian Lowe into sixth spot with a .325
mark. Cabrera had six homers to lead in that department. Taylor
Smith of Winnipeg and Paul Jones of Elmwood topped the
pitchers, each with eight wins. Brandon's Art Hunt had
the best winning percentage with seven straight wins without a loss.
(August 15) Carman Cardinals whipped
Minot 6-1 before the largest crowd of the season in Carman, more than
2-thousand fans. Johnny Wingo held the Mallards to five
hits in picking up the win. Cards got two hits apiece from Ron Teasley,
Lillord Cobb, Wingo and Luke Chojnowski.

inning gave Carman a 4-3 win over Brandon, stopping the Greys winning streak
at eleven games. Pitcher Dirk Gibbons had the game in control

into the outfield to allow two runs to score. Gord Elliott's
single drove in the winning run. Lillord Cobb went the
distance to pick up the win for the Cardinals.

Minot Mallards exploded for eight runs in the 6th inning to erase a 4-0
Elmwood lead and went on to dump the Giants 10-5. Zoonie McLean

distance for the win.

turned in one of the season's best performances, a two-hitter, as Carman
scored two early runs and held on for a 2-1 victory over Minot.
Jessup fanned ten. His mound opponent, Brad Tolson,
was almost as sharp, allowing only five hits. Sonny Andrews
doubled to knock in Lillord Cobb with the Cards first run in the
first inning and a two-base error and a Walter Thomas single in
the second plated what turned out to be the winning run. Jessup
brought the fans to their feet in the 5th inning with a tremendous drive
deep into centre field only to have Harvey Lapides make a
sensational over the shoulder catch against the fence. Cliff
Kempf had both hits off Jessup.

hits and drove in three runs to lead Elmwood to a 13-5 win over
Brandon. Andy Phillips had two doubles and two singles

Greys.

spot in the ManDak standings by sweeping a twin-bill from Winnipeg
Buffaloes, 5-3 and 6-3. Greys received solid pitching from Pedro
Naranjo, a six-hitter in the first game, and Art Hunt, a
five-hitter in the nightcap, to push the Greys six games ahead of the Buffs
with just five remaining. Ian Lowe and Manuel Godinez
each drove in a pair of runs in the opener, while Bus Vasquez
and Chuck Wilson each had two runs batted in in the second
game. The win for Hunt was his 8th straight.

(August 19) Minot Mallards moved into
a tie for second place in the ManDak League with a 9-8 win over the

eight-run second inning proved enough for the win. Fred Shepard
and Ted Strong each had a double and single for Minot.

Giants hopes for a playoff spot. Jessup (8-4) also was a star at the

and had three safeties for the Cards while Ron Teasley knocked
in a pair with a triple and a single.

(August 21) Winnipeg Buffaloes kicked up a
storm Monday in Minot. When it was over the team had been forced to
forfeit the game to the Mallards when manager Willie Wells Sr.
refused to let his team take the field for the 9th inning. The score
was tied 5-5. The fireworks began as Zoonie McLean beat
out a hit to Wells at shortstop and the Buffs playing-manager questioned
umpire Ed Kounovsky about the call. On the next pitch,
McLean broke for second and was called safe when John Kennedy
dropped the ball. Leon Day beefed to Kounovsky about the call
and was ejected from the contest. Wells objected to the action and
took his team to the dressing room. Norm Felde had a triple,
double and single for Minot and Sam Hill three hits for the
Buffaloes. Day punched out a double and triple. Officially, the
Mallards registered a 9-0 victory.

(August 22) A three-run rally with two
out in the 14th inning gave Winnipeg Buffaloes a 12-9 victory over the
Mallards in a game at Minot. Leon Day singled and stole
second to begin the uprising. Lyman Bostock singled to
score Day and moved to second on the throw to the plate. Joe
Taylor drove in the second run with a double and scooted to third on
a passed ball. Percy Howard's single scored Taylor.
Spoon Carter, who had taken over for starter Andy
Porter in the 10th inning, shut down the Mallards in the bottom
of the frame to preserve the triumph. Taylor led the offense with four
hits, a triple, double and two singles.

In a wild one at Osborne Stadium, Carman Cardinals scored five in the
6th inning and another five in the 7th and held on to shade Elmwood
12-11. The win assured Carman of fourth spot in the league
standings, ending the Giants' playoff hopes. Ron Teasley paced
the Cards with two hits, including a homer, two runs scored and two
runs batted in. The six pitchers used in the game, three for each
side, allowed a total of seventeen walks and hit two batters.

triple play in the 9th inning to stop a Carman rally and register a 7-5
victory before more then 3-thousand fans at Brandon. Cards had runners on first and second when Gentry Jessup
grounded to Ian Lowe at third base. Lowe rifled the ball
to Skeeter Watkins at second for the force and relayed to Bus
Vasquez at first to nip Jessup. Ray McWhoter,
who had moved to third, tried to score on the play but was cut down on
Vasquez' peg to catcher Ramon Rodriguez. Greys had just four
hits, but took advantage of a porous Cardinal's defense in the 4th inning to
score all seven runs. Dirk Gibbons went all the way for
the win. Smokey Joe Adams took the loss.

double star for Winnipeg as the Buffaloes swept a twin-bill from Minot to

the nightcap as Buffs won 5-0. Both were seven-inning contests.

carried the Mallards to a 6-5 win over Elmwood in Minot's final home game of
the season. Willie Cathey helped his own cause with a triple to

Zoonie McLean cleared them with a triple and later scored on a
fielders' choice.
