increased its lead atop the Northern League standings with a 7-4 win
over Neepawa. A five-run 1st inning by Dauphin proved enough for
the victory. Wayne Stephenson scattered seven hits to pick
up the win. Keith Myles lead Neepawa at the plate
with three hits including a homer, triple and double. Dave
McConaghy had three doubles.

(July 3) Al Jacousky had
four hits to lead Gilbert Plains to a 10-6 win over Grandview. Bill
Alexander, Doug Morden and Jacousky handled the
mound duties for the winners. Eddie McDonald and Bill
Hainstock worked for Grandview. Morden and Bill Murray
each had three hits for Gilbert Plains.

Brandon won its third tournament in a week taking first prize money in the $1,500
Virden Tournament. Greys downed Minot Mallards 13-7 in the final.
A bases-loaded triple by Gerry MacKay in the 4th
inning gave Brandon a lead they never relinquished. Tom
Johnson went the distance for the win.

(July 7) Doug Morden made an
auspicious debut with Gilbert Plains tossing a two-hitter in a 3-1 win over
Roblin. Morden had a no-hitter going into the 8th. Ted Morton
led the offense with a double and single in four trips.

(July 12?) Gilbert Plains posted seven
straight wins in two days to take top prize money in both the Binscarth and
Dauphin tournaments.
Al Jacousky tossed a one-hitter in the
final as Gilbert Plains rolled over Langenburg, Saskatchewan 10-0 on
Wednesday. He allowed just a scratch hit in the 8th inning.
Earlier, the Plainsmen beat Haller 7-3 as Orville Minish was
the winner in relief. Hunt pitched both opening games as Gilbert
Plains downed Inglis 3-2 and shutout Binscarth 2-0. Catcher Johnny
Stempak was the workhorse for the winners as he was behind the plate
for all four games.
(July 13?) On Thursday, Gilbert Plains
edged Roblin 3-2 in the final of the Dauphin tournament. Stan McPhee
went the distance for the win, scattering ten hits. Bill Murray
knocked in Jacousky with the winning run with a 3rd inning
single. Ted Morton had earlier doubled and scored on Jacousky's
triple. Stempak scored the first run when he tripled in the 2nd
inning and scored on a single by Minish. Roblin had defeated
Grandview 8-3 to advance to the final.
In the semi-final Minish tossed a four-hitter
and Murray clouted a homer as Gilbert Plains downed Dauphin
4-2. Stempak and Johnny Wilson belted homers as
the Plainsmen whipped Neepawa 10-6 in the opening game. Jacousky went
the distance for the win.

6-5 as MacDonald scored a pair for the winners. Goodman,
Ross, Lawson and Sabo each tallied a singleton.
Bill Murray netted a pair for Gilbert Plains with Stempack,
Plummer and Orville Minish each garnering one run.

(July 18) Len Pigg punched
out four hits to lead Roblin to a 5-3 win over Dauphin Red Birds at
Dauphin. Whitzel went the distance for the win allowing
seven hits. Whimpy Stephenson started strong for the
Red Birds retiring the first nine batters but weakened in the 4th.

(July 20?) Gilbert Plains walked away
with top money in the I.O.O.F. Lodge tournament in Grandview scoring two
runs in the bottom of the 8th to down Dauphin 6-5 in the final. The game was
called after eight innings because of darkness. Doug Morden
picked up the win in relief of starter Orville Minish. Johnny
Stempak had a triple, double and single to lead Gilbert Plains to a
7-2 win over Neepawa in the semi-finals. Coffee started on the
hill for the Plainsmen, giving way to Spud Williamson in the
3rd inning. Bill Alexander came on in the 7th. In
their opening game, Gilbert Plains edged Grandview 4-3 with a run in the top
of the 9th. Bill Murray tripled and scored on a fly ball
by Burdenuk. Morden and Alexander shared the
mound duties.

(July 23) Neepawa won both ends
of an exhibition double-header with Gilbert Plains at Clear Lake, 5-4 and
8-2. Gilbert Plains announced the release of pitcher Vic Franczak,
who has returned to his home in Milwaukee.

(July 24) Dauphin Red Birds took first
prize money in the $700 tournament held at Grandview. Birds downed
Gilbert Plains 5-1 in the final. Dauphin edged Grandview 5-4 in the
semi-finals.
(July 26) Poplar Point trounced
Gilbert Plains 10-0 to take top prize in the invitational tournament at
Neepawa. Gilbert Plains reached the final with a 2-0 win over Dauphin
as Doug Morden tossed a four-hitter. Poplar Point downed
Neepawa 4-3. Dauphin took third money with a 3-1 win over Neepawa.
(July 29) Grandview won its third
straight over Gilbert Plains, 7-5, in a exhibition match
Saturday. Southpaw Eddie McDonald notched his third win
over Gilbert Plains this season. He allowed seven hits.
(July 30) Gilbert Plains downed Flin
Flon 4-2 and 5-0 in an exhibition double-header at Flin Flon Sunday. Orville
Minish pitched a six-hitter for the win in the opener while Bill
Alexander allowed just one hit in a rain-shortened second game. It
was called after five innings.

pitched Gilbert Plains to a 9-2 exhibition win over The Pas on Monday.
(Aug 2) Roblin took top prize it its
own tournament. Gilbert Plains dropped an 11-9 decision to Neepawa in
the opening round.

Eddie Mazur fired a two-hit shutout with eleven strikeouts to
lead Dauphin to a 3-0 win over Grandview to clinch a playoff berth.
All the runs were unearned. Lou Bourbonnais provied all the
Redbirds would need with a two-run triple in the 3rd inning.
Coffey was the loser for Grandview.
(Aug 3) Dauphin also won its
tourney. The Red Birds dumped Gilbert Plains 4-1 in the first
round.

(Aug 9) Dauphin Redbirds clinched a playoff
berth downing Gilbert Plains 6-2 in a Northern League game at Dauphin.
The Plainsmen took the early lead with a run in the 2nd inning on a pair of
errors. They added another in the 3rd on singles by Frank Macey
and Plummer. Redbirds scored four runs in the 3rd frame when
Ed MacDonald,
on loan from Grandview, walked a pair before two costly errors and a long
single by Leo Bourbonnais. Two more
runs scored in the 5th on long flies by Bouchy
and Bourbonnais after
Tom Harris singled and Ray Nash
was hit by a pitch. Fate
Simms, who ended the 3rd inning rally by
grounding out, was the final out in the 5th as he tried to stretch a double
into a home run. Simms gave up seven hits in going the distance on the
hill for the winners. He fanned eight and walked two.
