(August 11) Elmwood manager Ted
"Double Duty" Radcliffe faced disciplinary action after what
was termed an "unwarranted attack on umpire Ted Early"
during Saturday's game between the Giants and Winnipeg Buffaloes.
Elmwood won the contest 11-3 to gain a split of the twin-bill.
Winnipeg took the opener 16-2.
The flare-up occurred in the 9th inning of
the second game. With two out, Willie Wells sent a long
fly to centre field. Lloyd Davenport leaned over a
barrier around the stands with his gloved hand and appeared to have missed
making the catch. However, Davenport then came dashing in with the
ball held high -- in his bare hand. Early didn't hesitate in signaling
a home run. That brought the Elmwood team out to protest. During
the argument, Early was shoved around the infield and later said he had been
struck by Radcliffe. "Sure he hit me. He hit me with his
glove." Radcliffe was ejected from the game.
Radcliffe drove in four runs, with
three doubles and a single, as the Giants trounced the Buffs in the
nightcap. Tom Parker scattered eight hits for the win.
