Left - Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe
in his days as a first baseman for Saskatoon
Legion and Saskatoon 55s in the Saskatoon
and District League and the Northern
Saskatchewan League.
This photo is believed to be from 1951 when
Howe joined playing-manager Roy Taylor
on the Saskatoon 55s. After pressure from
his NHL employers, the Detroit Red Wings,
Howe reluctantly hung up his spikes and
concentrated on the ice game.
Thanks to Michael Swank for the photo.
Andy Swota, ace hurler and batting star of the North Battleford Beavers, who copped first place in the Northern Saskatchewan League this year, is shown here receiving the most valuable player award, given this year for the first time, from James Chrones, of the Gem Cafe.
Swota leaves today for his home in the United States where he has enrolled for a university term. (Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, September 7, 1951)
