belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning to
give Carman an 11-9 win over Brandon in a controversial finish
to a four-hour ball game. Brandon had taken a 9-8 lead in
the top of the 13th. Schaefer's blast, with Chick
Longest and Lyman Bostock aboard, was first
ruled the third out of the inning. Cards' left fielder, Bus
Vasquez had gone back to the fence on Schaefer's hit and
swooped his glove along the ground as if making the catch.
He walked to the infield and the umpire signaled the third
out. However, several Carman spectators chased after
umpire George Murray and forced him to look in left field
where a ball was found lying under the fence. Murray then
erased the catch and awarded the win to the Cardinals. Harry

(August 16) ManDak League officials
have overturned Friday's verdict at Carman. With two on in the
bottom of the 13th inning and Cardinals trailing Brandon 9-8, Jack
Schaeffer laced one to left field where Bus Vasquez
appeared to make the catch. Angry Carman fans escorted umpire
George Murray to left and showed him a ball under the fence.
Murray reversed the decision to call Schaeffer the third out and instead
the play went into the books as a three-run homer. The Greys
protest has been upheld with the game going to Brandon by a 9-8 margin.
The decision means the Greys and Winnipeg Giants finish in a tie for
third place forcing a draw to determine who meets the second-place Cards
and first-place Mallards in the playoff semi-finals.
