(May 15) Johnny Ford got the Moose
Jaw Maples off on the right foot with an impressive opening day in leading
the Maples to a 9-6 win over Regina Caps in the season opener at Regina. Ford had a triple, three singles and a sac fly in five
trips driving in two runs and scoring three. Joe Navone gave up
10 hits but went the distance for the win. Regina right fielder Charles
Gary had four hits and a walk in five plate appearances.

3-thousand fans at Saskatoon defeating the hometown Gems 3-1 in the opener
at Cairns Field. Bob Herron blasted a two-run homer in the

Stone's three-run double was the key blow for the Beavers. The

as Regina took a 3-0 decision from the Gems at Saskatoon in the first of a

Regina Caps split an exhibition twin-bill in the Alberta city. Jim
Williams' Caps took the opener 4-3 in 15 innings as Percy
Trimont blasted a two-out triple in the 15th and scored on Roy
Williams' infield single. Phillies took the five-inning nightcap
1-0. The only run came in the 2nd inning as Rufus Johnson
singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Calvin
Walker's single. Walt Tyler who hurled the last
three innings of the opener, picked up the win in the second game.

before 3-thousand fans at Saskatoon to move to within a game of first place

in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge league-leading North Battleford 7-6 before about
1-thousand fans at Regina. The winning run scored as the Beavers' Les

three-run homer, his second four-bagger of the game, had tied the count
6-6. Percy Trimont also homered for the Caps.

five-hitter for the win. Caps plated the winning run on a one-out single and

according to statistics through games of May 31st. Regina's Roy
Williams was in hot pursuit at .405 with Saskatoon's Jim Ryan at .400.

bases, 33. Bennie Griggs of Saskatoon was the top pitcher with a 3-0 mark.
(June 1) Beavers exploded for six runs in the 3rd inning to whip

three-run double by John Coleman highlighted the fireworks. Coleman
scattered eight hits to get the shutout victory.

Regina Caps threw in a bit of everything for the fans at Taylor Field as the
club thumped Saskatoon 12-6, after spotting the Gems a 5-0 lead. Caps
pounded out 13 hits, made eight errors, stole five bases, gave up nine
walks, a wild pitch, a passed ball and, in the 3rd inning, had two runners
on the same base. Percy
Trimont was the big gun at the plate with a three-run homer, triple
and single. As if the game itself wasn't zany enough,
umpire Ron French lost his teeth! The official had placed his
dentures in a spot near the dressing room and they were missing after the
game.

scheduled to work the game at Saskatoon on Friday but didn't appear because
of a case of missing ... teeth.
French removes his false teeth before he takes the
field. He left them in care of the Regina Caps when he worked a game
at the Regina park. When the game ended, his teeth were missing and
the umpire was forced to remain in Regina to get fitted for a new plate.
(June 13) Harry Rhodes pitched and
batted Carman to a 9-2 win over Moose Jaw Maples. Rhodes went the
distance on the hill and drove in three runs with a homer and a
triple. Cardinals plated four runs in the 2nd inning and coasted to
the win. Benny Lott had three hits for the Cardinals. Milt Douzas had a triple and single for the Maples.
After the loss, Moose Jaw fired manager Bill
Peterson and announced that three members of the Saskatoon Gems -- John
Dean, Roberto Zayas and John Williams were slated to join the
team.

acquisition of two players -- pitcher Ted Wills a left-handed college

(June 15) Carman Cardinals cut loose
for seven runs in the last two innings to beat Saskatoon 8-6 before
25-hundred fans in Saskatoon. Cards sent ten men to the plate as they
scored four in the 8th then plated another three in the 9th on three hits,
an error and a walk. Harry Rhodes picked up the win in relief.
The contest counted as two wins for the Cardinals as the scheduled first
game of the series was rained out. The losses dropped Saskatoon back
into a tie with North Battleford for first place in the league
standings. Gems sent catcher Ignacio Romay to Moose Jaw.

Maples. Having fired manager Bill Peterson, the Maples under
interim manager Bill Nutzhorn dropped another -- 11-5 to the Regina
Caps. Maples had a 5-3 lead into the eighth when the Caps exploded for
eight runs. Maples acquired three players from Saskatoon -- catcher Johnny
Dean, pitcher Johnny Williams and infielder Roberto Zayas.

(June 16) Regina Caps received a
boost from newcomer Cliff Lefty Harrison, both on the
hill and at the plate as the Caps turned back Moose Jaw 9-5. Harrison,
called up from the Southern League's Regina Royal Caps, allowed seven hits
and two earned runs over seven innings to pick up the win. He also
singled in a run in the 2nd inning and had a bases-loaded single in the 4th. Johnny
Lloyd and Percy Trimont also had two hits apiece for the Caps. Jackie
Harbourne led the Maples with three hits. Ray Nutzhorn had a pair,
including a triple.

(June 17) North Battleford downed the Prince Albert Ligon's 5-3
in an exhibition match. Al Vogt, former Regina Cap, and Max

Phillies have been forced to throw in the towel. The club, a team
of imports from Philadelphia manged by Robert Wright, have been
hit by an unprecedented series of setbacks caused by cold weather, rain
and floods. On Friday, team owner Dick Lasha ordered
his portable lighting equipment tol Regina where he has obtained
permanent employment and the Phillies had to cancel a solid month of
bookings. Phillies players are likely to be in high demand by
other teams on the prairies.

three-hitter to lead Saskatoon to a 7-3 win over the Beavers at North Battleford. Griggs had nine strikeouts and allowed six bases on
balls.

change at the helm. Bob Wright, manager in Regina two years ago,
was announced as the new manager. Wright had been managing in Medicine Hat until the
club folded this week.
(June 19) Saskatoon Gems swept a pair
from the Maples in Moose Jaw, 7-2 and 16-9, in spite of several new faces in
the Moose Jaw lineup. Sherman Watrous provided the firepower in the
opener, blasting a two-run triple and a homer. Ted Wills picked up the
win. Jim Ryan led the Gems in the second game, knocking in four runs
with a homer and two singles. Mario Herrera added four hits in five
trips.

another managerial change. Walt Tyler took over as the club's fourth manager in
a week. Tyler, formerly with Medicine Hat, played with San Diego of
the Pacific Coast League in 1952. Three pitchers, who were with the
now defunct Medicine Hat club, were added to the roster -- Tom Bormouth,
Ralph King
and Benny Garrett. Garrett had appeared with Saskatoon on
Friday. Other newcomers included outfielder Rufus Johnson, who tried
out with the Gems last week, outfielder Al Henry and catcher
Bob Lambert.
(June 21) Moose Jaw and North
Battleford fought to an 8-8, 11-inning tie in a game called due to a Sunday curfew. Beavers' Roy Dean was the top hitter with three
safeties. There were no extra-base hits, but the teams combined to
make 13 errors.

(June 21) Regina manager Jim Williams has been
suspended for two weeks and fined $25 as a result of his actions in a
June 14th game at Saskatoon in which Williams was alleged to have struck
umpire Bill Sawusch of Chicago. The action was announced by
C.N. Henderson of Moose Jaw, president of the Western Canada
Baseball League. Henderson said he had been lenient in the matter
of the fine only because the southern teams are experiencing financial
difficulties.

blanked Saskatoon on seven hits as Moose Jaw scored a 2-0 victory at Cairns
Field. Both Maples' runs came in the 7th inning. Former Gem
Roberto Zayas scored the eventual winner opening the inning with a walk,
moving to second on a balk and scoring on Jackie Harbourne's single.

carried Regina Caps to a 10-4 win over Moose Jaw. Lindsay Carswell's
three-run, inside-the-park homer was a highlight of the uprising. Charles
Gary had three hits and drove in three runs. Frank Pickens
went the distance for the win. A crowd of more than 11-hundred
attended the first game under the lights at Taylor Field.

between the Beavers and Minot at North Battleford was washed out after just
four innings with the Beavers ahead 2-0.
(June 24) Minot Mallards scored
an unearned run in the 3rd inning and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory as Saskatoon went
down to its fourth loss in interlocking play. Fans at Cairns Field at Saskatoon saw a brilliant pitching duel between the Gems' Ted Wills, who
pitched a four-hitter, and winner Sugar Cain who allowed just five
safeties. Cain fanned eight without a walk. Wills struck out six
and walked five. The win counted as two victories for the
Mallards. The double loss dropped the Gems back into a first-place tie
with North Battleford.

in Saskatoon, Jim Morrow held Minot to three hits as the Gems downed the
Mallards 5-1. Morrow and Leopoldo Reyes paced the Saskatoon offense

Saskatoon an early 6-0 lead then roared back to top the Gems 9-7 before 25-hundred fans at Cairns Field
at Saskatoon. The victory moved the Beavers
into sole possession of first place. Gems had taken the lead with
a six-run 3rd inning, but the Beavers came back with seven in the top of the
4th. Beavers added unearned runs in the 7th and 9th to notch the
victory. Outstanding relief pitching highlighted the contest.

over second-place Carman to a game and a half in the ManDak league standings
while Saskatoon's lead in the Saskatchewan league dropped to just a
half-game over second place North Battleford.

fanned three times. It was Weekly's first game with Moose Jaw after starting the season

cheer about in Regina as the Caps crushed Saskatoon Gems 12-5 and
24-7 in a double-header. In both games, Regina had to come from behind
to score their victories.

opener after dropping behind 5-0 in the top of the 2nd. Bill Wilder,
who relieved started Charlie Peerless in the 2nd, went the
rest of the way for the win.

and drove in a pair. Peerless drove in five runs with his
triple and a single. The game produced 34 hits, 24 by the Caps, and a
total of 12 errors. Gems used five pitchers in the 2nd frame in an
attempt to halt the Caps' onslaught. One, Ezequiel Diaz,
was ejected before he was credited with pitching to a batter. Diaz
objected to a balk call and got the thumb from umpire Bill Sawusch.

belted a leadoff homer in the 12th inning to give North Battleford a 10-7
win over the Royals in an interlocking game at Winnipeg. After Tate's
blast, the Beavers scored two insurance runs on three singles and an
error. Murray Richardson turned in a superb relief
effort for the Beavers, coming on in the 2nd inning and holding the Royals
to three hits the rest of the way. Tate also had a double,
single and a stolen base. Roy Dean knocked in two runs
with a homer and a double.

thirty-six runs in a double-header in Regina, Saskatoon Gems received a 16-5
thrashing by the Moose Jaw Maples. Gems tried four hurlers, including Gordie
Howe, but failed to stop the Maples bombardment. It was the
Maples third straight win under new manager, Bob Linck.
Gems aided the Maples offense by committing seven errors. Dave White
picked up the win in relief of starter Jim Myers, who left in
the 2nd inning with an injured elbow.

the win. Highlight of the game was a tremendous three-run homer by the
Maples' Rip Robinett. His 5th inning blast went over the
centre field fence, some 450 feet from home plate.

portable lights, and many of the Regina hits were fly balls lost in the
lights by the Southern squad many of whom had never played under the

the other side Wednesday night. Two weeks after demolishing Saskatoon
12-5 and 24-7 in a double-header, the Caps were the victims of a
record-setting offensive by the Minot Mallards. Mallards rapped out 29 hits
in crushing the Caps 22-3 before 13-hundred fans at Minot. The
outburst topped the 24 hits by Winnipeg Buffaloes in a 22-8 win over Brandon
in 1950. Every Mallard had at least one hit and one run. Duke
Bowman led the offensive with five hits, a triple, double and three
singles, scored four times and drove in four runs. Dean Scarborough
had five singles and Zoonie McLean knocked in five runs with a
triple and three singles. Mallards did all their scoring in the first

came back to Cairns Field to haunt his former teammates Monday as he pitched

who played brilliantly in centre field, paced the Caps at the plate with

Maples 12-1 before 959 fans in Minot. The game was worth two victories
for the Mallards as the clubs were rained out of a scheduled tilt at Moose

game in the Manitoba city. Herb Souell added three

Carman announced the addition of pitcher Felix Pino, fresh
from service in the United States Army.

Pickens pitched a seven-hitter. Caps got
their first two runs with two out in the 1st inning. Johnny
Coleman walked three straight then a pair of

allowed two runs to score. Four walks, an error and a sacrifice fly
led to two more runs in the 7th. Ken
Nelson scored both runs for the Beavers, on a
infield out in the 4th and on Bob Herron

held Moose Jaw to seven hits while registering twelve strikeouts as Winnipeg
Royals edged the Maples 4-2 before 2-thousand fans at Osborne Stadium.
Royals got just five hits off lefty Max Weekly. However, they took
advantage of some sloppy fielding, six walks and a balk to notch the
victory. Maples' Rufus Johnson led the hitters with a homer,
double and single while Walt Tyler added a double and
single.

(July 29) Regina Caps exploded for five runs in
the 8th inning and downed North Battleford 7-6. Down 6-2, Bob
Knight started the rally with a triple to deep
left centre. Hiram Marshall's

waited out a base on balls to bring in the Caps 4th run. With one out,

single and Johnny Washington added three singles. Lefty McKinnis
held
the Maples to just seven hits and struck out 14, a high for the
season. Darrell Martin went the distance for Moose Jaw giving
up 17 hits.

registered his third straight win for Saskatoon as he set down North
Battleford on five hits in a 4-0 victory before 2-thousand fans at Cairns
Field. It was the Gems first game under new coach Pete
Beiden from Fresno State in California. Max
Bentley drove in two runs for the
Gems. The win moved the Gems to within one game of the
league-leading Beavers.

Doig made his first start for Saskatoon a
winning one as he survived a shaky 1st inning to go the distance in a 7-5
win over Regina. Doig gave up three runs in the opening frame,
including a two-run homer by Percy Trimont,
but went on to scatter seven hits the rest of the way. Caps made six
errors to hand the Gems five unearned runs.

pitched seven-hit ball and struck out 11 to spark Saskatoon to an 11-2 win
over Moose Jaw. The Gems had 11 hits and took advantage of 11 walks
and four errors. Len Karlson punched out a double and
two singles to lead the Gems at the plate. Leopoldo Reyes
and Sylvester Snead each had two hits. Johnny Ford
led the Maples with three hits.

(August 4) Saskatoon scored three in
the top of the 10th then held on to shade Moose Jaw 5-4 in a thriller at
Exhibition Park. Two of the runs scored on a wild throw as catcher Rip
Robinett tried to pick off a runner at first.
The teams had played 6 1/2 scoreless innings
when the Maples scored in the seventh on two singles and an error. The
Gems pulled ahead 2-1 in the ninth on a walk, a hit batsman, a passed ball
and an error. Moose Jaw rallied to tie, 2-2, in the bottom
on the ninth as Rufus Johnson doubled and Robinett drove him
home with a single. Mario Herrera's single in the
10th drove in Buzz Jackson, and Herrera and Bob Doig,
who reached on an error, scored on the wild throw. The Maples came
back in the bottom on the inning with two runs on a double by pitcher Max
Weekly and singles from Johnny Ford, Walter Tyler
and Johnson but Al Henry popped up to end the threat.

took to the hill to try and cure the Maples mound woes. He succeeded. Linck beat North Battleford 3-1 in the first of two allowing
just six hits, all singles. Maples turned five double plays. Maples

McGuigan and a Johnny Ford double, a Walt Tyler single
scored two runs. The Beavers won the second game 5-3 with lefthander Johnny

opener 4-2 as Bob Doig held the Caps to five hits. Percy
Trimont, the league's leading hitter was not in the lineup. He was
expected to miss two or three weeks with a broken thumb.

ahead of Roy Williams of Regina, at .358. Percy Trimont
of Regina, the previous leader, dropped to third place with a .346
average. Trimont, sidelined with a wrist injury, and Bob Herron
of North Battleford shared the lead in homers, with six. Herron had the most runs
batted in, 30.
(August 8) Indian Head Rockets edged
Moose Jaw Maples 8-7 in an exhibition contest at Moose Jaw. Rockets
held off a late charge by the Maples, which resulted in four, 9th inning
runs, to take the win. Sammy White was the winning pitcher while

innings because of darkness. Weekly came on in relief of
starter Darrell Martin with two outs in the first and allowed just two hits the rest of the way. He
fanned eight. Maples got eight hits off Gems' star Bennie Griggs. Roberto Zayas, Chuck McGuigan and Jackie
Harbourne each had two hits for the Maples. McGuigan was hurt in the
sixth inning sliding into second base. It was feared he might have a
fractured ankle.

hits, including a homer, and six runs batted in. Ken Nelson
