SASKATCHEWAN LEAGUE :
(Saskatoon
Star-Phoenix, 29 August 1953)
Hiram Marshall of Regina Caps has been
declared batting champion of the Western Canada Baseball League with a .353
average.
Marshall, who played left field and third base besides taking a turn behind
the plate, had 42 hits in 199 trips to the plate.
Slugging specialist was Bob Herron of North Battleford who led in total
bases with 139; in doubles, with 17; in runs batted in, with 60; and in home
runs, with 12. His average of .341 was also good for runner-up spot to
Marshall.
Herron tied with teammate Curtis Tate and Moose Jaw's Johnny Ford for the
lead in triples, with five apiece. Base-stealing champion was Mario Herrera
of Saskatoon with 19.
Behind Herron in the home run department came Percy Trimont of Regina and
Roy Dean of North Battleford, each with seven. Dean and Tate were prominent
in runs batted in, each with 43.
Regina had the best hitting club with a .278 percentage, followed by North
Battleford with .273, Moose Jaw with .249 and Saskatoon with .240. Beavers
hit the most home runs, 38, which was 17 better than the runner-up Caps.
In team fielding, North Battleford led with .942 while Saskatoon rated at
.935 and Moose Jaw and Regina had identical .915 marks. Beavers led
the league in double plays with 58.
Lefty Mike Dzingelowski was the loop's top hurler with four wins and no
defeats. Chuck Holdaway of Beavers and Mike Kanshin of Saskatoon had
5-1 marks. In strikeouts, Bennie Griggs of Saskatoon nosed out teammate
Ted Wills, 92-91.

The Winnipeg Free Press reported (September 4,
1953, p.24)
Dean Scarborough, the slugging first
baseman of the Minot Mallards is the Mandak Baseball League batting
champion for 1953, according to statistics released by Stan Pepler.
Scarborough, who joined the Mallards when
Mickey Rocco was released to Winnipeg Royals, took over
with great gusto, and at one time was hitting the ball at well over
.400. But that was too great a pace for anyone to keep up.
The closest man to Scarborough was Lester
Lockett of Carman Cardinals, who met the apple at a highly
respectable .332 pace, and one point back of Lockett at .331 was
another Mallard, Duke Bowman.
The selections were based on 150 or more times at
bat. Actually, Carlos Forten, young pitcher with
Winnipeg, was tops with .375, but he batted only 24 times.
Sugar Cain of Minot, and the league's winningest pitcher,
hit .357 at 112 times at bat.
Big Pete Hughes of the Royals, the
most walked man in the league, although it doesn't show up in the
statistics, apparently wasn't being given those passes for nothing.
Besides ending up sixth in the batting race with a .324 average, he
set an all-time league record for home runs in one season by polling
13 circuit clouts. One top of that, he led the league with
runs batted in with 66, 11 more than his nearest rival, Lyman
Bostock of Carman, who had 55.
Curly Williams, who joined Carman
Cardinals after they had played about 15 games, could quite feasibly
have beaten Hughes in home run production had he been in the league
all season. He was only one homer behind Hughes.
Bob Strader of Royals, after a slow
start, came on to top the league in doubles with 24, seven more than
Herb Souell of Carman, Connie Juelke and
Chuck Carroll of Minot and Bill Spaeter
of Royals.
Cowan Hyde, who doesn't appear big
enough to hit the ball out of the infield, proved quite a power to
the Brandon Greys as he laced 10 triples to pace the loop.
Jesse Douglas, who started the
season with Winnipeg, but finished with Brandon, showed his prowess
on the base paths with 13 stolen bases, one more than teammate
Clarence King.
The pitching statistics present a problem.
Which pitcher is the best? Going strictly on percentage, Ed
Albosta, manager and relief ace of Minot, would appear to
have the title with eight victories and two defeats for an .800
average. But somehow Sugar Cain seems to be tops
with the most wins 12, as against five losses for a .706 average.
There is no earned run average listed. Here are the complete
records.

CHINOOK (ALBERTA) LEAGUE :
Fennessey Leads Chinook Batsmen
(The Calgary Herald, August 25, 1953)
Bill Fennessey of Purity 99, coming on with a
rush in the late stages of the campaign, took the Chinook Baseball
League batting crown away from Gus Kyle of Universal
Mercurys, the leader right up to last week.
Fennessey garnered 41 hits in an even 100 times at
bat and was well ahead of Kyle who boasted a .394 average. All
players with 70 or more times at bat qualified for the batting title and
the trophy that goes with it.
Kyle, on the other hand, was the leader in hits 50;
runs batted in 52; and doubles 10. Ron Stewart of
Mercurys scored the most runs 35, and had the most triples, four.
Cyril Ing of Red Deer, now with the pro Stampeders, led the
pack with 10 home runs. [Although the stats printed show Ing with just 7
homers.] Hank Bassen stole the most bases, 17.
In the pitching department, Bert Lahey
of Purity 99 boasted the best earned runs average 1.62. Pitchers
who had taken part in five games or more qualified for honors.
Don Kirk, Carstairs southpaw ace, was
the leader in all other departments. He had the best record of
all, 15-1, and had the most strikeouts, 168.
