In a contest billed as the "battle of champions" the
Seattle Cheney Studs edged Granum White Sox 3-2 in an
exhibition game "that turned out to be one of the best
baseball games played in modern times in central
Alberta." (Hal
Pawson, Edmonton Journal)
"A 'small' home run -- just
inside the foul line flag 270 feet out in short left field"
was enough to give Seattle the victory. Dick Naish's
eighth inning blow scored brother Ed, a catcher, ahead of
him. The White Sox, Alberta senior champions, had won the
Lacombe Tournament, which the Cheney Studs had hoped to
enter but were forced to withdraw to protect the eligibility of
three Olympic prospects on their roster.
"It was a heartbreaking
smash for Jack Altman, who went all the way for
Granum and gave up only five hits. But it was some sort of
justice for 17-year-old Ron Georger, speedy
southpaw, who pitched the last seven innings for the Studs and
gave up only two hits while striking out 15 White Sox."
Granum opened the scoring in the
second inning as Hans Pung's single drove in Earl
Ingarfield who had reached on an error. Studs
