SOUTHERN (SASKATCHEWAN) LEAGUE :
Regina Red Sox outfielder Denny Cochrane, skip of a rink that was runner-up for the Dominion Junior Curling laurels a few years ago, is the new batting king of the Southern League. Cochrane edged out Assiniboia's Gord Skjerven by a slim .006 margin in clouting the ball at a .398 clip. He also led or tied for the lead 4 of the 5 offensive departments.
The Crimson Hose fly-chaser cracked out the most hits, 35, scored the greatest number of runs, 31, and tied for the lead in the doubles and triples categories. Skjerven's .392 average was second while Jack Shupe of the Weyburn Beavers came in third at .359. Shupe was second in the number of base hits with 33 while Notre Dame rookie Eddie "Chief" Bearss was credited with 32. Ed Prosofsky of the pennant-winning Red Sox and Estevan's Nasie Schnell each had 31 hits. Schnell was the runner-up to Cochrane in runs scored with 28 while Al Manz of the Red Sox crossed the plate 25 times.
Cochrane and Lorne Shanks of Assiniboia each had 8 doubles to tie for the lead in that department while Cochrane shared the 3-bagger lead with teammate Ken McEachern, each having 5. Bearss, the Hounds' 17 year old shortstop, took the home run honors with 4, one more than Cochrane and rookie Alex Korpan of Weyburn.
Three pitchers - Vic Wall of Regina, Hugh Carr of Notre Dame and Paul Pearson of Assiniboia -- tied for the league lead in wins, each with 7. Tom Leverick of Regina had the top winning percentage with his 5-0 record. Pearson had the most starts, 14, and complete games, 11.

OUTFIELDER SETS 3 STANDARDS,
DAVIS NO.2 HITTER BY 2 POINTS
(By Larry Sullivan)
Three hits on the final day of the season enabled Roy Weatherly to slip past the injured Butch Davis of Minot and become the 1955 Man-Dak League batting champion.
Final official averages have the Williston slugger finishing with a .371 mark to Davis' .369 and taking his second bat title in succession. He clubbed .412 last year.
Weatherly totaled 111 hits in 299 at bats, 23 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs and 61 runs batted in. He set three new league records -- homers, total bases and slugging -- and came close to establishing others.
All told, seven important batting records were broken in 1955. Five men surpassed the base hit mark of 98, set in 1953 by Duke Bowman, John Washington and Herb Souell.
Bismarck's Ray Dandridge lined 118 hits, Weatherly 111, Bill Jankowski of Bismarck 103 and Bob Easterbrook of Bismarck and Bob Betz of Williston, 99 each.
Lloyd Gearhart slammed 17 home runs in 1954 while playing for Williston, but Weatherly this season blasted 21 and Easterbrook and Dickinson manager Ron Bowen 18 apiece.
Weatherly far outstripped Bob Strader's total bases record of 163, piling up 205. Easterbrook listed 180. And the batting titlist topped his own slugging average of .676, upping it to .686.
Easterbrook,. Betz and Bowen drove in 68 runs each, nudging Pete Hughes' 67 of 1953 for Winnipeg.
Dickinson's Dick Morgan raised the times at bat level to 329, while Dandridge had 328. The former total of 322 was held by Strader of Winnipeg.
Bill Raehse and Dandridge topped Strader's 24 doubles, Raehse with 26 and Dandridge with 25.
Davis did not play during the final two weeks, except for pinch-hitting duties, and his average remained approximately the same. Weatherly declined from the .380s to .366 before the final game.
The Minot outfielder closed with a .369 percentage. He was the M-D titlist in 1950 with .456 -- all time high -- and in 1951 with .406.
Dickinson hurler Don Orwiler and recent Minot arrival George Wopinek batted .382 and .381 respectively, but did not qualify for the title.
High stickers include Bill Hockenbury, Bismarck, .366; Dandridge, .360; Easterbrook, .359; Bill Cash, Bismarck, .357; Zoonie McLean, Minot, .351; Art Pennington, Bismarck, .349; and Dolph Regelsky and Betz, Williston, .348 and .343.
Milt Joffe of Dickinson and Jankowski each collected nine triples.
Among Minot Mallards, Duke Bowman picked up the most hits, 98. This tied his 1953 league record. McLean drove in 57 runs, Don Corcoran 55 and Duke 52.
McLean notched 13 circuit clouts and Corcoran 11. Davis clipped 21 doubles.
Other Mallard batting marks are Duke .321, Corcoran .301, Eddie Bowman .296, Dean Scarborough .289, Willie Patterson .280, Sugar Cain .254, and Dewey Williams .230.
Minot players who left the club before the season ended include Bill Pinckard .348, Joe Monteiro .313, Tom Gatts .297 and Joe Massaro .279.
Bismarck led the loop in team batting with .308, Williston came second with .303, Minot .301 and Dickinson .274.
The Oilers cracked 103 home runs, Bismarck 97, Dickinson 61 and the Mallards 60. The Barons totaled 850 base hits, while Williston had 547 runs scored.
CAIN LEADS M-D PITCHERS
WITH 2.94 EARNEDE RUN MARK
By Larry Sullivan
Sugar Cain was the Man-Dak League's leading pitcher in 1955.
The Minot curveballer gave up 2.94 earned runs per nine innings to edge out Bismarck's Mike Lotz, who had 2.95. Cain struck out 91, leading for the third straight year.
Preston Elkins of Williston went undefeated in seven decisions and posted a 2.34 ERA, but did not have quite enough innings to qualify for the title.
Official baseball rules require a pitcher to work one inning for each game scheduled for his team, or 78 in the Man-Dak League. Elkins, joining the Oilers in midseason, hurled only 73.
Winningest pitcher of the year was Bill Rose of Dickinson with 10. But he also lost ten decisions, as did Dick Schoonover of Williston and Dickinson's Fred Brenzel.
Other pitchers under 4.00 earned runs include Jonas Gaines, Bismarck, 3.27; Don Lee, Williston, 3.65; Schoonover, 3.67; Roger Higgins, Bismarck, 3.69; and Rabbit Cartledge, Minot, 3.89.
Five twirlers totaled eight victories each -- Cain, Lotz, Gaines, Schoonover and Higgins.
Lotz fanned 79 and Schoonover 73.
Jim Michalec of Dickinson worked a top of 152 frames, Rose 149 and Schoonover 147.
Schoonover allowed 176 hits while Walt Mitchell, who left Dickinson late in the season, issued 77 bases on balls. Minot's Tom Horton passed 72.
Higgins was one of the best control pitchers ever to see action in the loop, walking only 11 in 117 innings.
Other Mallard hurlers, with their won-lost records and ERA's, include Mel Duncan 2-1, 4.50; Stan Milankovich 4-2, 5.23; Tom Horton 3-4, 5.34; Dirk Gibbons 5-7, 5.44; and Ted Edmunds 4-3, 6.82

Oiler Infielders Walk Off with M-D Fielding Honors
Williston Oiler infielders Bill Sharp, Dolph Regelsky and Ronnie Martin led the Man-Dak League in fielding at their respective positions during the 1955 season.
As a team, the Oilers led the the league in fielding with a .964 percentage. Dickinson was second with .963, Bismarck ranked third with .956 and Minot finished last in fielding with a .953 mark.
The Oilers' sweep of infield honors almost extended to the first base and catching departments. Frank Roelandt, the Oilers' steady receiver, was edged out by Bismarck's Bill Cash in the back stopping percentage .989 to .988 and Bill Raehse, the Oilers' first sacker, was nudged by Dickinson's Ron Bowen .991 to .990.
Williston second baseman Bill Sharp led the league at his position with a .965 percentage. Regelsky was tops in the shortstopping department with an impressive .978 mark and hometown boy Martin topped the league's third basemen with a .950 percentage.
Ray Berns of the Oilers had the best fielding average for outfielders but Bismarck's Art Pennington was named the official leader, since Berns didn't play as many contests. Bob Betz of the Oilers, ranked third with a .969 fielding mark and Roy Weatherly, the league's top batter, was eighth with .916.
Don Petschow, who split the season with Minor and Dickinson, led the "handymen" with a .989 fielding average. Handymen are those who divided their time among a number of positions. Many of the other players in the league filled in at other spots occasionally, but only for short stints.
Two new records were set. Ron Bowen established a new mark for putouts (730). That topped the old standard of 714, set by John Washington of Brandon in 1953. Dickinson's Buddy Afremow now holds league record for assists with 297. The old mark was established in 1951 by Minot's Zoonie McLean with 225.
As a team the Oilers committed 110 errors during regular season's play. That was five miscues less than Dickinson committed to rank second in fielding behind the Oilers. Bismarck had 137 bobbles and Minot errored 144 times.
Raehse had seven errors at first; Sharp 15 at second, Martin only 10 at third and Regelsky five at shortstop. Roelandt committed only four errors behind the plate and Berns had seven in the outfield. Betz committed four miscues in his right field garden and Weatherly was guilty of 12 bobbles in dividing his time between the center and left field positions.
