(May 12) Preston Elkins led Kitchener on the mound
and at the plate as the Panthers kicked off the 1955 Intercounty
Baseball season with a 9-3 victory over Galt Terriers before about 1,000
fans at Kitchener. The right-hander went the distance scattering eight
hits and belted a three-run homer in the 2nd inning. Catcher
Harry Psutka also had a four-bagger for Kitchener in the 2nd
frame. Bill Cooper took the loss.

It was a night of fireworks in the Intercounty League as Oshawa clouted
Brantford 19-8 and London topped Galt 12-3.

coasted to the mound decision in spite of Brantford's six-run 7th
inning. The game featured nine homers. Wilmer
Fields belted a pair for the Merchants with Bill Turk,

shots. Brantford homers came from George Carruth,
Harry Fisher, Tom McGrattan and Ron

Bill Jamieson fired a six-hitter to lead St. Thomas by
London, 4-1. Lefties Jamieson and Lew Fisher were in
a tight pitchers' duel into the 7th inning when catcher Stanley
Glenn poked a two-run homer for the Elgins. St. Thomas
added another pair in the 8th to record their 6th win without a loss at
home this season. Jamieson fanned six without issuing a base on
balls. He had two singles and a walk in three trips to the plate.

More than 5,000 fans turned out as Toronto Maples Leafs of the
International League thumped Brantford Red Sox of the Intercounty League
16-6 in an exhibition game. Proceeds from the match were destined
for the Shriners' hospitals for children. Leafs exploded for six
runs in the first inning, four coming home on Don Griffin's
bases-loaded homer. Mike Goliat belted a three-run
homer in the 2nd and Lew Morton had a two-run shot in the
7th. Pitcher Al Gavey had a homer for the Red
Sox.

with a double and two singles. Red Mingle picked up
the win, pitching into the 6th inning. Don Robertson,
who relieved in the 2nd for the Red Sox, was the loser. He had 11

(June 27) The Oshawa Merchants love to see Johnny
Ambrose of St. Thomas on the mound in the late innings. Last
Thursday, the righthander gave up a three-run homer in the 9th to give
Merchants an 8-6 win. Last night it was a 10th inning homer to
Wilmer Fields to hand Oshawa a 3-2 victory. Eddie
Drapcho went the distance with a four-hitter for his 2nd win.

Wilmer Fields drove in three runs with a homer and triple to lead
Oshawa to a 5-3 win over Galt. He scored twice. His 8th
inning homer was described as one of the longest blows ever seen at
Dickson Park traveling an estimated distance of more than 500 feet.
Newcomer Cecil Hall pitched into the 8th inning to pick up
the win. Jim Martin, forced into starting due to
Jeep Jessop's sore arm, went the distance for the losers.

Kitchener Panthers handed Brantford its 6th straight loss, 12-10, with a
19-hit attack. Outfielder Dan Chepkauskas led the way with
four safeties. Vern Kaiser, a National Hockey League
player in the winter, belted a two-run homer in the 7th to follow
Tommy McGrattan's two-run shot in the 4th. Shanty
Clifford was best for the Red Sox with a double and three
singles, three runs batted in and a stolen base.
Panthers took
an early 6-0 lead but the Red Sox roared back with five runs in the 4th
and another three in the 6th to go in front, 8-6. But the roof
fell in for the Sox in the 7th as Kitchener exploded for six markers.

(July 8) Brantford Red Sox announced the acquisition of
infielder Stan Breard from Oshawa. He played for the Red
Sox in 1954 and managed the team for the first half of the season.
This season, the Sox, unable to meet Breard's salary terms, sold his
contract to the Merchants. He's a switch hitter who can played
shortstop or second base. He's the third player signed by
Brantford this week. Earlier, the club signed second baseman
Lonnie Blair from Pennsylvania and lefty pitcher Earl
MacDonald who formerly played in the Laurentian League.
(July 8) Galt Terriers allowed 13 hits and committed seven errors
in handing London Majors an 11-8 victory. Pete Karpuk led
the winners with three hits, one of them a homer, and three runs scored.
Dale Creighton had a homer and single, drove in two runs
and scored a pair. Ralph Brawner was the big gun for
Galt with a homer, two singles, three runs scored and two driven home.

loss in 26 games for the Red Sox. Terriers scored all five runs in

two-hitter through six innings before the roof caved in. Shanty

(July 11) St. Thomas announced the release of pitcher
Johnny Ambrose, a 25-year-old right-hander from New Jersey.
(July 11) Oshawa stretched its undefeated streak to six
games with a 10-1 decision over St. Thomas. Eddie Drapcho
went the route for the win allowing just five hits. Freddie
Thomas was the hitting star with five runs batted in on a homer,
double and triple. Fred Etcher had three hits and
Ted O'Connor had a pair.

downing the Merchants 6-1 for their first win in four starts against the
Merchants. Bill Best, making his first home start of the
season, held Oshawa to seven hits in taking the mound victory and helped
at the plate with a two-run double. Wilmer Fields,
the Oshawa hitting star, was ejected in the 7th inning after an argument
with the umpire over a third strike.

Jessup and Chick Longest, a pair of former Negro leaguers paced the
attack with three hits apiece. Longest had a homer, two singles,

distance to register the pitching win, drove in three markers.

Kvasnack's debut as Kitchener manage as the 30-year-old right-hander
limited the Panthers to seven hits in a 10-4 victory for St. Thomas.
Kvasnack took over after Dick Walker's resignation on
Saturday. Willie Casanova led the offense driving in
three runs with three hits in four trips. Stanley Glenn
knocked in a pair with a double and single. Herm Mason,
the Elgins' shortstop clubbed a three-run homer in the 8th inning.

starred for the Red Sox. He went the distance on the hill and had
three hits, including a two-run homer. First baseman Shanty

(July 19) Brantford Red Sox posted their 3rd consecutive
victory, 5-4 over London. Luther "Shanty" Clifford's
two-run homer was the big blow for the winners. A brilliant relief
effort by Don Robertson saved the day. Robertson relieved
starter Earl McDonald in the 6th inning with none out and
the bases loaded and proceeded to shut down the Majors without a hit the
rest of the way. Bob Simpson took the loss.

(July 19) In an outstanding pitching duel in Kitchener as
Johnny Maldovan bested Jeep Jessup as the Panthers
topped the Terriers 1-0. Each pitcher allowed just five hits.
The only run came in the 7th inning. Vern Kaiser
opened with a single to right and reached second on an error. A
ground-out moved him to third and a bad-hop single to short by Don
Oberholtzer rolled into left field for a double. In the 8th
inning Kitchener's Bobby Schnurr was thrown out at home
after tripling to right-centre.

demolishing Brantford 20-7. The winners erupted for three huge

(July 21) Kitchener's Billy Allan fired a no-hitter
as the Panthers shutout London 3-0. It was the first no-hit game
in the modern history of the Intercounty League. Allan, in
registering his 7th win, struck out four and walked three. In the
8th inning a sparkling defensive play by third baseman Bobby
Schnurr saved the no-hitter. First sacker Pat O'Keefe
drove in a run with a double and triple.

8th inning to take an 8-6 decision from Galt Terriers. Dick Walker,
who picked up the win in relief, cracked a homer and knocked in two runs
and also scored a pair. Harry Evans belted a three-run

(July 24) Harry Schaeffer tossed a
seven-hitter in Oshawa's 6-1 win over Kitchener at Maple Leaf Stadium in
Toronto. Schaeffer who won his 9th game, against just one setback,
fanned six and walked only one. Wilmer Fields led
the offense with three hits, one a towering homer in the 3rd inning.
Freddie Thomas also homered for the Merchants and add two
singles. Catcher Harry Psutka's homer averted a
shutout for the Panthers.

Wilson with the winning run in the 13th inning as London Majors
shaded Galt Terriers 6-5. Bob Simpson, London
right-hander, was horrible for one inning and brilliant for twelve.
He gave up five hits, including a two-run homer to Bill Bowman
in the first inning, then blanked Galt on seven hits the rest of the way
to register the win. He fanned 11 and walked two. Jeep
Jessup was the loser although he allowed just two hits in his six
innings of work. Wilson had three hits for London, Ralph
Brawner had three for Galt.

(August 2) Catcher Rollie Leveille broke up a marathon at
London with a homer in the 18th inning to give Oshawa Merchants a 4-3
win over the Majors. Oshawa had scored in the 8th to tie the match
at three apiece. The teams then battled through 9 scoreless innings
before Leveille struck in the top of the 18th. Both pitchers,
Harry Schaeffer for the Merchants and Lew Fisher
for London, went the distance.

(August 3) Wilmer Fields, in just his third start of the
season, fired a three-hit shutout as Oshawa blanked Galt Terriers 2-0.
He fanned six and walked two. Merchants tallied the only run they
needed with two out in the 3rd inning when George Brabin
singled to centre and Marv Rich and Cec Hall
followed up with base hits. Dan Lewandowski
gave up 10 singles in taking the defeat. Terriers lost the
services of Chick Longest when the outfielder left for an
opportunity in pro ball with Burlington, Vermont, of the Provincial
League.

had nine strikeouts and walked just one. Mike Pontarelli
belted a homer in the 4th to provide the Panthers with their winning
marker. Catcher Harry Psutka had two hits and drove
in a pair. Centrefielder Dick Walker had an RBI
without an official at bat. He walked twice, was hit twice and
laid down a sacrifice in five trips.

Majors 14-5. The league's leading hitters, Wilmer Fields and

dramatic finish crushing a walk-off, grand-slam homer to give Terriers
the win. In the 8th, pinch-hitter Lew Fisher blasted a
grand-slam homer for the Majors. Wray Upper had a big day

Johnny Ambrose took the hard-luck loss, his 10th without a
win. Sox scored in the first inning on a walk to Ron
Hodara, Jimmy Wilkes' single and an infield out.
They made in 2-0 in the third as Luther Clifford singled
in Tom McGratton who had doubled. The third marker
scored on an error in the 6th. Kitchener notched its only run in the 6th
on a fielders' choice.

(August 24) With a two-run rally with two out in the bottom
of the 9th, St. Thomas edged Galt 3-2. The win clinched a playoff
berth for the Elgins, the defending champions. Shortstop Herm
Mason's single to left scored Marc Reaume with the
winning run. Butch Lawing's homer in the second
marked the first run for the Eglins and he scored the tying run in the
9th as he led off with a walk and scored on Reaume's second double of
the game. The contest featured a strong pitching duel between
Jim Martin of the Terriers and Al Dumouchelle
of the Elgins until Martin was ejected in the 7th inning for arguing an
umpire's call. Sonny Andrews had four hits to pace
the Terriers.

regain possession of fourth place in the league standings. Lew

Don McLennan's two-run homer, put the game out of reach.

Majors' starter Bob Simpson for single runs in each of the first
three frames, two in the 4th and a pair in the 8th. Bill

(August 28) The last place Galt Terriers wound up the
regular season with a 10-7 victory over Kitchener in a game which
featured 12 errors, 7 by the Panthers. Dick Anderson led
the attack with a homer and single and three runs batted in.
Wray Upper had a homer and two singles and two runs batted
in. Marv Raab had three hits. Dan
Lewandowski went the route for the win.

(August 28) Brantford Red Sox whipped Oshawa 14-1 as
Shanty Clifford drove in five runs with a pair of homers and a
single. The win moved the Sox into a tie with London for the 4th
and last playoff spot. Winning pitcher Harry Fisher, who allowed
just four hits, blasted a three-run homer. Sox jumped on Merchants'
starter Billy Myers for four runs in the first inning.

(August 29) With an unofficial batting
mark of .425, Wilmer Fields of Oshawa Merchants, has captured the
1955 batting title in the Intercounty Baseball League. Fields had
77 safeties in 181 at bats. He also led the league in home runs,
12, and runs batted in, with 55. Harry Fisher of Brantford
was the runnerup at .375 and 46 RBI. Two other Oshawa batsmen
finished 3rd and 4th. Roy LeFevre hit .359 and
Rollie Leveille .356. Butch Lawing of St.
Thomas was 5th at .342 and Shanty Clifford of Brantford
ended at .338. LeFevre topped the IBL in doubles, 18, and
stolen bases, 15. Harry Schaeffer
was the loop's top hurler with a 12-2 record.
Harry Fisher was close
behind with 12 victories and 4 defeats. Don
Robertson of Brantford had the most
strikeouts, 116.

29) Brantford Red Sox gained a playoff berth with a 2-1
victory over London Majors in a sudden-death game. Jimmy Wilkes
knocked in the winning run in the 9th inning. Earl
MacDonald and Don Robertson combined on a six-hitter
for the Red Sox. Lew Fisher allowed just six hits in
taking the loss.

Oshawa Merchants took the opener of a best-of-five playoff series 8-6
over Kitchener. A four-run 5th inning was the difference.
Harry Schaeffer held the Panthers scoreless until the 8th inning
when Kitchener scored a pair. Kitchener erupted for four in the 9th to
make it close. Merchants had scored early taking a two-run lead in
the 1st inning on Johnny Ambrose.

series at one game apiece.

(Sept 2) St. Thomas Elgins swept their semi-final series in
three games downing Brantford 8-3 behind Gene Florcyk's
seven-hitter. Elgins took a 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Red Sox
rallied to tie in the 3rd. St. Thomas went ahead with a pair in
the 5th and added two in the 6th and another in the 7th.

(Sept 2) Oshawa won a spot in the finals with a 9-3 victory over
Kitchener Panthers. Merchants scored seven runs in the first two innings
and coasted to the win.

(Sept 4) St. Thomas whipped Oshawa 11-5 in the opening game
of the best-of-seven Senior Intercounty League final. Elgins pounded out
15 hits to take thewin.

(Sept 5) St. Thomas clobbered Oshawa 15-2 to take a 2-0 game lead
in the Intercounty final series. Merchants started the game with
just ten players. The St. Thomas Baseball association apologized
to the 3,242 fans for the conduct of the players of both teams.
The contest turned into a farce after five innings with Oshawa
infielders taking over mound chores and Elgin batters swinging from the
opposite side of the plate. Elgins jumped on Oshawa starter Cec
Hall for seven runs in the first five frames. Bill
Jamieson held the Merchants to eight hits to take the win.
Every St. Thomas batter had at least one hit except Willie
Casanova who walked three times and scored three.

(Sept 6) Oshawa Merchants called on their slugger to try and
quiet the St. Thomas bats in their semi-final series. Wilmer
Fields responded to the challenge going the route as Oshawa won 5-4
for their first win in the series. Merchants rallied for three
runs in the 8th inning on two walks, a double and two singles to tie,
4-4, and notched the winner in the 9th. Ted O'Connor
drove in Cec Hall with the decisive marker. Fields
held the Elgins to seven hits and sparked the 8th inning rally with a
double.

(Sept 8) St. Thomas Elgins moved to within a game of the
Intercounty Baseball League title with a 6-3 win over Oshawa.
Elgins rode a pair of two-run homers to take a 3-1 game lead in the

Mason supplied the long ball power and Elgins were aided by six
walks and three Oshawa errors. Al Dumouchelle
scattered 11 hits for the win, his 3rd in the playoffs.

(Sept 8) St. Thomas Elgins are Intercounty champions for the
second straight years. Elgins downed Oshawa Merchants 10-4 to take
the best-of-seven final in five games. Elgins took advantage of five
errors to notch the win. Playing manager Tommy White went
the route on the hill for St. Thomas and helped at the plate with three
hits. Fred Etcher had a double and two singles for
the Merchants. Wilmer Fields and Fred
Thomas each added a pair.
