June 9 - It was a familiar story as
the Meridians kicked off the 1956 season at Edmonton. The Esks,
who dominated Lloydminster in 1955, won again, 11-7 before 37-hundred fans.
Eskimos overcame a 5-3 deficit with an eight-run sixth inning. Seven
of the runs scored after there were two outs. Gary LaComb had
three hits and three runs batted in for Edmonton. Gary Pennington
of the Esks and John Karpinski of the Meridians had
homers. Eight of the Edmonton runs were unearned.

three-hitter to lead Saskatoon to a 5-2 win over North Battleford. The
Gems had 5-thousand fans for their opening game. Mark Bussan, Cliff

June 10 - Playing-manager Stan Karpinski
allowed thirteen hits but went all the way as Lloydminster turned back
Edmonton 6-4. Jimmy Valentine drove in four runs for the

June 10 - The Gems swept their opening series
with the Beavers with an 8-4 win before 2-thousand fans at North
Battleford. Saskatoon had sixteen hits with Jack Motley

June 11 - Moose Jaw opened the new season on
the winning note shading Regina 3-1. Ronnie Watts

June 11 - Bob Jones held Edmonton to four
hits as the Gems defeated the Eskimos 8-3. Jack Motley
drove in three runs with a homer and a triple. There were eleven

June 12 - Meridians southpaw Oscar Tesch
pitched a three-hitter but came away with a loss as Moose Jaw edged
Lloydminster 1-0 behind 19-year-old Ben Reniker who allowed
just five hits. The only run came in the second inning as first
baseman Burke Nicholson drew a walk, advanced to second when Ted
Hitel was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Buddy Burgess.
Curly Williams, with two singles, was the only batter to get
more than one hit. Jim Garrett of the Mallards had the only
extra-base hit, a triple.

June 12 - Saskatoon blew a 5-1 lead in the
ninth but came back to beat North Battleford 6-5 in ten innings for their four straight

June 12 - Dale Zeigler, a 19-year-old USC lefty, pitched a five-hitter and fanned thirteen to lead
Edmonton to an 8-3 win over the Braves at Regina. The Braves got their
runs on two errors and a wild pitch. Ken Guffey and Gary
Pennington each had three hits for the Eskimos. Carl Maggio
had a three-run triple and Tom Shollin knocked in two more
with another three-bagger. Zeigler was described by Tony Robello,
New York Yankee scout in the Pacific Coast area, as "the best prospect
in California".

June 13 - Meridians pounded out fourteen hits
to defeat the Braves 6-3 at Regina. Second baseman Benny Lott
led the winners with four hits. Outfielder Eddie Morris

got the last out. Catcher Keith Gustin knocked in two

homer in the seventh was the key hit as Edmonton shaded Moose Jaw 6-5.

June 13 - In the first of the interlocking games, the Dickinson
Packers of the ManDak League beat Saskatoon 5-2 behind the 8-hit pitching of

June 14 - Benny Lott crushed a
grand slam homer as Lloydminster trounced Edmonton 14-6 at Sportsman's
Park. Meridians wiped out a 3-0 Eskimo lead with nine runs in the
fourth inning. Lott and Stan Karpinski each had four
runs batted in. There were eleven errors, six by the Eskimos.

June 14 - Connie Juelke blasted a pair of home runs and a double
to drive in five runs as Bismarck thumped Saskatoon 13-3. Sam Hill had four hits and

June 14 - Sugar Cain tossed a five-hitter as Minot sent North Battleford to its 5th consecutive defeat, 7-0.
Hal Daughtery had the game's big blow, a three-run,
inside-the-park homer in the 8th inning. Mallards announced the
acquisition of pitcher Vernon "Pete" Taylor who had been with Little
Rock of the Southern Association.

June 14 - Regina Braves scored six runs
in the bottom of the ninth, five runs coming with two outs, to upset Moose
Jaw 11-10. The Mallards blew leads of 9-0 and 10-5. Bobby Phair
knocked in the winner after Art Shahzade had walked in with the tying
marker. Braves sent eleven batters to the plate. Regina took
advantage of 11 hits and 13 bases on balls. Shahzade had five walks in six
trips to the plate. Dick Warren and Mark Cameron each had three hits
for the winners.

June 15 - Bill VanderLaan tossed his
second straight three-hitter, but this time he won, as the Braves beat
Lloydminster 8-4. The 22-year-old right-hander had a no-hitter until
the fifth when Curly Williams blasted a triple. John

him home with a single. After an error and a walk, Stan Karpinski
drove in a pair with a single and Robert Zayas crossed the plate on an
infield out. Norm Huletz led the Braves with a pair of doubles.

June 15 - Saskatoon Gems had 16 hits, including a pair of homers to
best the Mallards 8-5 at Minot. Gems jumped off to a 4-run lead in

June 15 - Al Cihocki belted his first homer of the season, Al Leap

Higgins picked up the win, although tiring in the 9th when the
Beavers rallied for five runs.

June 18 - Mike Dayne pitched a
three-hit shutout to give the Beavers a 3-0 win over Saskatoon and their
first win after seven losses to open the season. He fanned
eight and walked just one. The only extra base hits were doubles by
the Gems' Gordon Morgan and the Beavers' Mark Bussan,
purchased from Saskatoon just before the game.

June 22 - The Eskimos delighted more than 21-hundred fans at Renfrew Park
with a 7-0 win over Saskatoon. Owen

nine hits to win his fourth straight. Edmonton had a big fourth inning
scoring four times on three singles, two walks, a sacrifice fly and a
throwing error. The victory consolidated the
Esks hold on first place.

called after seven by rain. The Eskimos' John

June 25 - Moose Jaw scored three in the first and added three more in the
third to down Williston 6-5. The game was called after 5 1/2 innings

June 26 - North Battleford came back with four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning,
after Edmonton had scored three in the top of the inning, to escape with a
5-4 win in the first game of a twin-bill. Bennie Griggs got the win, holding the Esks to three hits. The Beavers pounded out 16 hits in the second game
and trounced the visitors 12-4.

Moose Jaw Mallards moved into first place with a 4-2 win over

game, Dick Satalich drove in two runs with a seventh inning

consecutive win as Regina whipped

title in 1955, was the batting leader through games of July first.
Pemberton, the Saskatoon third sacker, had a .377 average, ahead of Carl

and Rich Rubio of Moose Jaw, at .367, rounded out the top

July 1 - North Battleford Beavers rallied for five
runs in the 6th inning and downed Williston
11-9 in an interlocking match in the Saskatchewan city. Art
Worth allowed 13 hits but managed to go the distance for the win.

Bob Herron for the Beavers. Art Stone had three hits

July 2 - Lloydminster swept another
twin-bill from Edmonton, 5-4 and 13-7. It was their second double-header
sweep in two days and extended the Esks' losing skid to nine games.
And, with their fifth straight win, the Meridians moved into sole position
of first place in the Western Canada league standings. Meridians won the opener on Jimmy Valentine's two-run single in the
ninth. John Karpinski and Barney Brown each had
two hits for Lloydminster. Phil Oyler led Edmonton with
three hits. Gary LaComb had a homer. Brown,
with ninth inning help from Bill Bailey, picked up the
win. In the nightcap, Valentine knocked in six runs to lead the
Meridians. Valentine, Eddie Morris and Dick
Satalich each had two hits for Lloydminster. Carl Maggio
of the Esks had the only homer. Newcomer Jim Hansen, obtained
by the Meridians in a trade with Moose Jaw, gave up just three earned runs
in pitching into the ninth.

July 2 - Jesse Blackman powered North Battleford

a double-header sweep of Moose Jaw. Blackman blasted two homers and a
single as the Beavers won the first game 8-1 and he had another homer and
two singles in the second game as North Battleford scored a 10-5 victory. Curtis
Tate and Bob Herron also had homers for the Beavers.

Ponoka, scattered seven hits and fanned 11 in a 3-0 shutout win over Moose
Jaw. The victory ended the Eskimos 10-game losing string.

with Moose Jaw. The Mallards bunched 5 of their 7 hits for three runs

July 6 - Regina Braves suffered a double
setback at North Battleford. They lost a 5-4 decision to fall out of first place and
lost pitcher Bill VanderLaan for the season with a broken
leg. VanderLaan was injured sliding into home with a run in the third
inning. It was the Beavers sixth straight win. Bob Herron
paced the winners with a pair of homers. Curtis Tate
also homered for North Battleford and Lee Murphy and Tony Levaggi
had circuit blows for the Braves.

Pemberton of Saskatoon moved into the batting lead in the Western Canada
league according to statistics from Howe News Bureau. The statistics covered
games up to July 1st. Pemberton's .377 mark led Carl Maggio
of Edmonton, at .371, and Norm Huletz of Regina, at
.370. Tom Shollin of Edmonton and Gary Pennington
of Saskatoon had the most homers, 3. Regina's Dave Cavillan
was the leading hurler with five wins and no losses.
July 7 - Jim Hansen pitched a
brilliant two-hit shutout as Lloydminster downed Moose Jaw 4-0 and moved
into sole possession of first place. Hansen
faced just 28 batters. He gave up an infield single in the third
inning and a double to Rich Rubio in the ninth. Rubio
was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple. John Karpinski
had a double and triple for the Meridians. Dick Satalich
drove in what proved to be the winning run.

July 7 - Don Kirk allowed
just two hits to lead Edmonton to a 4-0 win over Saskatoon in the first game
of a double-header. The Gems broke loose for 12 hits in the second
game to trounce the Eskimos 10-2. Doug Gostlin was the

July 8 - Don Stewart, the 1955
playing-manager of the club, rejoined the Meridians and had three hits as

six-hitter, retiring 16 consecutive batters in one stretch, to lead the
Eskimos to a 10-6 win over Regina. Four of the runs against Doucette
were unearned. Tom Shollin provided the offense with

Gostlin in the bottom of the ninth to give Saskatoon a 3-2 victory
over Moose Jaw. Gems had three hits in the ninth but had one runner

seven-hitter. Dick Doepker, who also allowed seven
hits, took the loss. Ernie Rodriguez of the

split two -- each decided by a 6-3 score. Stan Karpinski held

Button combined on a two-hitter as Saskatoon took advantage of five
Edmonton errors and nine walks to beat the Eskimos 5-3 before 15-hundred fans
at Saskatoon. Bowes, who
came on in relief in the second, pitched a one-hitter the rest of the
way. Dale Zeigler allowed just five Gems' hits, but gave up
nine bases on balls and a pair of costly wild pitches.

July 12 - The Beavers claimed first place in
the Western Canada League with a 16-4 win over the Braves at Regina. Bob
Herron drove in five runs with a homer and two doubles and Curtis

collected three hits, one of them a homer. Mark Bussan
also had a round-tripper for North Battleford and Art Shahzade homered for

to the latest statistics from Howe News Bureau. Cliff

also had the lead in homers, with eight, and runs batted in, with 27. Dave
Cavillan topped the pitchers, with

pitched a seven-inning one-hitter as North Battleford shutout Moose Jaw 5-0. Dayne
faced just 24 hitters, one reaching on a single, another on a walk, and a

The Saskatoon Gems stopped the Lloydminster Meridians 8 - 2 to post their
fifth straight win in the second game of a postponed doubleheader. The
opener was rained out after 5 scoreless innings and will be replayed. Gems'
starting pitcher Jackie McLeod was struck on the leg by a
liner off the bat of Dick Satalich in the 4th inning and was taken to
hospital where x-rays showed only a severe bruise. McLeod gained the victory
although requiring bullpen help from Doug Gostlin. Gary
Ball was the loser.

July 14 - Edmonton's Ralph Vold
pitched the best game of the day but was a loser as the Eskimos and Regina
split a double-header. Esks won the first game 8-3 as Bob

right-hander allowed six walks, three in the sixth inning when the Braves

pitched 18 brilliant innings as Lloydminster swept a twin-bill from Regina,

manager gave up just one earned run and didn't walk a single batter. Don
Stewart led the Meridians at the
plate in the opener with a double and single. He had a triple in the

a bases-loaded triple to lead Williston to a 18-5 thumping of Moose Jaw
in an interlocking game at Williston. The big inning for the

Williams went the distance for the win. Paylor, who knocked in
four runs, has had 11 hits in 15 at bats since joining the club.

hit, a homer by John Karpinski, but beat Saskatoon 5-4 to gain a split of a
double-header with the Gems. Saskatoon won the opener 6-1, the
continuation of a five-inning, scoreless tie the teams played on July

Lloydminster scored four of its five runs in the first inning when
pitcher Lew Hobson walked two, hit two batsmen and the Gems made two errors.

grand slam homer in the third, a two-run homer in the fourth and a double in

July 30 - Minot Mallards rallied for three runs in
the bottom of the 9th inning to shade the Edmonton Eskimos 11-10 in
spite of allowing 16 hits to the Canadian visitors. The winning run
crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk by Bob Jones to Bob Van Eman, who had

August 01 - In an awesome display of offense,
Williston battered the Meridians for 28 hits in demolishing Lloydminster

was a hitters' haven, it was a pitching duel in Dickinson where the home
town Packers beat the Eskimos 1-0. Bob Jones of Edmonton and the

hits. The only run scored in the fifth when Packers' catcher Ev
Johnson singled and scored on an error and a single by Jerry Didier.

August 2 - Ben Reniker tossed a
six-hitter to pick up his fifth victory in Moose Jaw's 6-4 win over
Lloydminster. Buddy Burgess led the Mallards with three
hits. Catcher Jim Garrett knocked in a pair of runs with a
double and a single. All the runs against Reniker were unearned as the
Mallards booted the ball six times. Meridians' centrefielder Dick
Satalich made two brilliant plays in the 8th inning to squelch a Moose
Jaw uprising. He made a perfect throw to home to cut down Garrett and
then raced in to make a shoe-string catch on Ernie Rodriguez' drive and
fired to first to trap Reniker for a double play.

August 2 - Edmonton stayed atop the standings
with a 3-2 win over the Gems at Saskatoon. Eskimos had the bases
