1956 Basin League Game Reports  

 


(June 12)   In a wild, offensive outburst which featured 48 runs, 37 hits and 10 errors, Watertown's Eddie Broeker crushed four home runs and teammate Paul Donovan crushed three as the Lake Sox scored six in the 9th inning to dump Mitchell Kernels 27-21.  The game featured 12 homers, nine by the winners.  Bob Burr, Joe Lutz and Jack Baer had four-baggers for Mitchell.  Carlee Hendrix and Bob Williams had the others for the Sox. Donovan drove in eight runs and Brocker had seven RBI.  Ted Berner picked up the win.

Pierre Cowboys won their opening Basin League tilt downing Winner Pheasants 5-3 as George Schmid and Jim Clark combined on a four-hitter.  Pierre playing-manager Jim Ransom led the Cowboys with two hits, one of them a homer.  Al Ware also had two hits, including a triple.  Outfielders John Demerit and Tom Futch belted homers for Pierre.  Ernie Trujillo was the starter and loser for the Pheasants.

Yankton Terrys exploded for six runs in the 9th inning to down Huron Elks 11-7.  While out-hit 14 to 7 by the Elks, Yankton drew 14 bases on balls from the four Huron hurlers.  Merlyn Jorgenson and Billy Branson each drove in two runs for the winners.  Dean Scarbrough was the game's hitting star with two doubles and a homer, driving in three runs.  Bill Thurston picked up the win in relief of starter Bob WiltseBob Gosling took the loss.

(June 13)   Paul Dean Jr. registered his initial Basin League victory as Chamberlain Chiefs downed Winner 10-9.  Dean pitched into the 8th inning when he needed help from reliever Bun HaysMatt Peoples, first of three Winner pitchers, took the loss.

(June 17)   Pierre Cowboys scored the winner on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th inning to edge Yankton Terrys 5-4.  Milt Welch and Tom Futch each singled and Yankton pitcher Bill Thurston intentionally walked Harry Messick to load the bases and set up a potential double play.  However, pinch hitter Dick Novicki worked Thurston for a walk and Futch plated the winning marker.

Playing-manager Nick Adzick drove in the winning run with a double in the bottom of the 9th inning to give Valentine Hearts a 7-6 win over Watertown Lake Sox at Valentine.  Adzick's clutch blow followed a single by George Levitt and a sacrifice by Vince RobinsonEddie Broeker homered for the Sox in the 3rd inning when Watertown scored all its six runs.  McCormick was the winner.

A five-run 3rd inning, which included a steal of home, carried Winner to an 8-5 victory over Huron. It was the 4th straight loss for the Elks and the first win for the Pheasants.  John Vossen powered a three-run homer and Dick Bertell had a solo shot for Winner.  Bertell sparked the Pheasants in the 3rd with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice and Duane Zimmer's scratch hit.  As Huron catcher Ed Tanner went to the mound to talk with pitcher Andy Swota, Bertell raced for home.  Winner claimed the Elks had failed to ask for a time out.  Dick Jok clubbed a homer for Huron and Tanner had three hits, including a pair of doubles.

(June 19)  Harry Wise chalked up his 3rd straight win as Yankton moved into first place in the Basin League standings with a 13 to 6 win over Winner.  After the Pheasants had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on home runs by Al Ware and Jim Ransom, Phil Hunt belted Hal Norris' first pitch for a homer in the bottom of the inning to spark a three-run inning for the Terrys.  A five-run 4th inning iced the win for Yankton as Fred Frickie provided the big blow, a three-run homer. Bill Jorgenson and Joe Buckstead also had circuit blows for the winners while Tom Clarkson replied for the Pheasants.

(June 20)   Watertown Lake Sox moved into a tie for first place in the Basin League with a 13-12 victory over Chamberlain.  Bill Horning, a local player who was married Saturday, singled in Paul Donovan with the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning after the Chiefs had taken the lead with a five-run outburst in the top of the 9th.  Horning captained the Minnesota Gophers to the NCAA college baseball title this season.

(June 20)   Connie Juelke marked his return to the Basin League with a game-winning, two-out,  single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Huron a 7-6 victory over Pierre.  Juelke, who left Bismarck of the Mandak League Saturday, drove in Dean Scarborough with the deciding run.  Andy Swota, who relieved starter Gosling with the bases loaded and nobody out in the first inning, went the rest of the way for the win.  Swota scored the tying run in the 9th inning on Scarborough's single.  After Pierre took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, on a bases-loaded walk and John DeMerit's three-run double.  Hank Ertman belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to draw the Elks to within a run.

(July 20)   Catcher Dick Bertell clouted a bases-loaded homer in the 1st inning to jump start the Winner offense as the Pheasants went on to trounce Yankton 17-10 Friday.  A 10-run explosion in the 6th inning put the game out of reach.  Al Ware's two-run homer highlighted the big inning.  Yankton erupted for seven runs in the 9th inning before Don Hyman relieved to put out the rally.  Bertell drove in five runs for Winner and Bill Thurston had three for the Terrys.  Wyman Carey picked up the win, Dick Griffin was the loser.

(July 20)   Bill Graham fired a four-hitter as Watertown topped Chamberlain 6-2. The Lake Sox took a 3-0 lead after two innings and were never headed.   Gary Anderson of Chamberlain had the only homer.  Bruce Haroldson took the loss.

(July 20)   A big first inning carried Valentine to a 13-7 win over Mitchell.  The Hearts erupted for six runs as they sent 12 men to the plate and had the bases loaded when reliever Dee Seagraves finally retired the side.  Frank Stanek struggled through five innings to capture the win.  Curtis French came on in the 6th and pitched no-hit ball the rest of the way.  Catcher Nick Adzick belted a two-run homer for the Hearts.

(August 21)   Watertown Lake Sox used an unearned run in the 8th inning to shade Valentine 1-0 to capture the Basin League championship.  Dick Howser opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on  a wild pitch.  Bill Horning singled to left and, as outfielder Gabby Hormann had trouble with the drive, Howser streaked home with the game's only run.  Lefty Ron Perranoski scattered ten hits in blanking the Hearts.  Frank Stanek allowed just six hits in a losing cause.
