(June 4) Saskatoon
Gems downed the new Rosetown club 8-3 for their second straight
exhibition win of the season. The game was halted after
seven innings because of darkness. Charlie Beene
picked up the win in relief of starter Lew Hobson.
Jim Stevens handled the final inning. They
held Rosetown to four hits. Len Breckner paced the
offense with three hits. Gary Anderson went the
distance for Rosetown. Others in the lineup were Chuck
Holdaway, Reg Pendleton, Don Snyder,
Gary Franklin and Merle Byrnes.
Six player from St. Louis University -- Terry
Goewert, Dave Sanders, John McCartney,
William Schall, Jerry Birk and John
Willie arrived in Saskatoon Tuesday to join the Gems.
(June 7) Second baseman John
McCartney hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to
hand Saskatoon a 7-6 victory over North Battleford in the opening game of the 1957
Western Canada Baseball League. It was McCartney's second
homer of the game. Cliff Pemberton had a four-bagger for
the Gems.

North Battleford dropped a 12-6 decision to Saskatoon. John McCartney,
his third, and Harold Key belted homers for the

first game with Edmonton as the Eskimos whipped the Meridians
9-1 in the season opener at Lloydminster. 16-hundred fans
took in the action at Sportsmen's Park. Eskimos wrapped it
up in the second inning scoring four times on three walks, a hit
batsman and two errors. Shortstop Mike Castanon had three
hits for Edmonton. Modie Risher, Ed Tanner and
Tom Roberts
each had two hits for the Meridians. Risher had to leave
in the eighth when he split a finger on a fielding play.

(June 10) Lefty Lew Hobson shutout the Meridians after
the first inning to lead the Gems to an 8-2 win at Cairns
Field. Lloydminster jumped into a 2-0 lead in the
opening frame on back-to-back singles by Benny Lott and
Tom McGhee, a double by Curly Williams and a sacrifice fly by
Ed Tanner. Saskatoon tied it in their half of the

fourth allowed the Gems to take the lead. Hobson
went seven innings in near-freezing temperatures to get the

added one as Edmonton held on to shade North Battleford 8-7. Eskimos had
blown a 7-0 lead. Beavers made it close with four in the

Wilson's fifth homer of the season brought the Beavers to within
one run, but Tom Garcia struck out to end the threat. it
was North Battleford's fourth straight loss.

(June 11) Lloydminster got just two hits but took
advantage of ten walks, four errors and a passed ball in downing the Braves 6-3 in

another run in the fifth as Benny Lott singled in

in the bottom of the third for the Mallards and the Meridians
got their second run in the sixth when Benny Lott singled,
stole second and scored on Ed Tanner's double. Mallards'
Larry Miller gave up six hits and fanned eleven.

(June 12) In a wild
affair at Renfrew Park, there were 21 runs, 24 hits, 10
errors, 10 innings, a beaning, a broken ankle, player ejections,
and, the cops. In the end the Beavers prevailed,
12-9. Beavers' Johnny Ford was arrested
after a sixth inning fracas. Emile Francis,
the North Battleford manager, was ejected under police
escort. He had protested a called strike by umpire Roland
Natter. Two Edmonton players -- Bob Gerst
and Don Stewart were injured and lost for the
season.

of the season, 5-3. Curly Williams had three hits for the
winners. Bob Henry, with relief help from Bob
Lehow picked
up the win. It was a makeup game for Friday's scheduled
contest which was rained out.

bottom of the inning, slammed a homer. Curtis Tate capped
the inning with the three-run homer. Ford led the Beavers

twice and stole two bases in leading Moose Jaw to a 10-7 victory

singles. Mallards lost Ron Wiley for the
season when he received notice of his callup to the
military.
