(June 11) Winner Pheasants kick off the new season on Thursday
with a tune-up match at Delmont. Four members of the 1956 squad
are on hand including, Jim Ransom, last year's manager, first
baseman Pat O'Keefe and pitcher Wyman Cary.
Ware, a Winner manager in previous seasons, but not in '56, will man
second base. Others who have arrived are Ken Waters,
a California collegian, Tom Pruitt from Mississippi State
and Phil Risinger a shortstop from Oklahoma. He's a
cousin of Mitchell's Tony Risinger.
(June 13) Jim Ransom knocked in six runs with a
homer, double and two singles as Winner Pheasants trounced Delmont 20-2
in exhibition action at Delmont. . Winner exploded for 15 runs in
the last two innings. Winner manager Al Ware, who had just
10 players available, rotated three pitchers in the outfield when not on
the mound. Jim Pruitt, Pat Gillick and
Bill Thom combined on a four-hitter with 17 strikeouts.
Pruit went the first three frames allowing just one hit and a run with
lefty Gillick blanking Delmont for three innings on two hits and Thom
finishing allowing one hit and a run. Pruitt and Gillick
were productive at the plate. Pruitt drove in four runs with two
doubles and a single. Gillick clubbed a three-run homer. Ken
Cochrane had three hits for the Pheasants while Phil
Risinger, Dick Little and Ware each had a pair.

(August 13) Duke University track star Dave Sime has
decided not to play semi-pro ball in South Dakota's Basin League.
Sime had earlier agreed to play for the Pierre Cowboys. Sime said
he had been advised that playing in the league could jeopardize his
amateur standing. He planned to leave Pierre immediately for
Durham, North Carolina to prepare for the National AAU track meet next
week.

(June 18) Rudy Trbovich hurled a
three-hit shutout and knocked in a pair with a single to lead Pierre
Cowboys to a 4-0 win over Winner. He had ten strikeouts and
survived five bases on balls. Lefthander Pat Gillick
was the tough-luck loser allowing just one earned run and seven hits
through seven innings.

Shortstop Allen Kiddy drove in four
runs with a homer, double and single and scored twice as Mitchell
Kernels trounced Watertown Lake Sox 16-5. Third baseman Bob

(June 19) A four-run 5th inning carried Yankton
Terrys to a 7-4 victory over Huron Elks. Second baseman Jack
Crouch had three hits and scored two for the winners. Jerry
Boxer held the Elks to six hits in going the distance for the
win. Just two of the runs against him were earned. Don
Stella was the loser.

Rapid City won its season opener, 6-4 over Pierre as
George Schmid went the route on the mound and belted a homer and
double to pace the offense. Third baseman Lon Bonczek drove

hits and an unearned run to notch his first win as Winner shaded
Valentine 2-1. He also had a hit and scored one of the Pheasants'

7th to top Rapid City 7-4. Cal Emery's three-run homer was

(June 26) Huron plated a pair of runs with two out in the
4th inning and made them stand up for a 4-3 win over Pierre Cowboys.
A bases-loaded walk scored one run and the winner came in on an error.

the 3rd. Jerry Adair, Tom Orton and Ed
Bowman each had two hits for the winners. John
Herrnstein had two hits, including a homer for Pierre. Ray
Snyders registered the decision with 9th inning relief by Fred
McDuffie. Cowboys had runners on first and second with two
out in the 9th and tried a double steal but catcher Orton fired to Duke
Bowman to catch Harry Messick for the third out.

(June ) Winner Pheasants pounded out 19 hits to dump
Rapid City 15-6. Jim Ranson had four hits while Frank
Tanana, Al Ware and Tom Cochrane each
had three. Tanana's hits included a homer and double as he drove
in four runs and scored two. Ransom and Ronnie Boone
each scored three times. Tom Pruit, Joe
Belak and Tom McCaig combined to hold the Chiefs to
six hits. Belak got the win allowing just one hit over 4 1/2
innings of relief.

bases-loaded home run in the 2nd inning to set Watertown on the way to a

two singles driving in three runs and scoring a pair. Big Dick
Radatz allowed then hits but pitched into the 9th inning to
register the mound victory.

(June ) Pierre Cowboys had 15 hits but dropped a
12-9 decision to Rapid City. Five errors contributed to eight

chalk up the win, his first of the season. Pete Maynard
and Ken Fryer each knocked in four runs in a losing cause
for the Cowboys.

double to drive in three. John Feldman had three hits and
scored a pair.

Pierre blanked Winner 4-0. He fanned nine and walked five in

(July 1) Bob Burr's two-run homer in the 6th
inning was the difference as Mitchell downed Watertown 9-7. Burr,
who had three hits, drove in five runs. Hal Daughtery
had two hits and knocked in three while Dick Pawlow had
three safeties and scored three times. Allen Kiddy added
two doubles and a single for the Kernels. The Lake Sox had three homers

Sox. Eddie Fisher was the winner with and
outstanding relief effort by Tony Risinger who allowed no

(July 2) Rapid City took an early lead then held off a
late rally to down Watertown 10-7. The Chiefs were out-hit 13-7,
but took advantage of six errors by the Lake Sox. Don Quayle,
the winning pitcher, knocked in three runs with a double and a sacrifice
fly. Catcher Buster Cloud had three hits and drove
in a pair for the losers.

(July 6) Mitchell Kernels fell behind 6-0 before their
first at bat but stormed back to down Huron 18-10 in a slugfest at
Mitchell. In a game which featured seven home runs, Kernels scored
a pair in the bottom of the first then added eight runs in the second to
put way the Elks. Shortstop Allen Kiddy was the big gun for
the winners scoring two runs and driving in four with a homer and two
singles. First baseman Joe Lutz scored three and
knocked in three with a homer run and a double. Relief pitcher
Don Schwall had two hits and drove in three with a homer and
single. Catcher John Janocha scored four runs and drove in
a pair with a homer and double. Duke Bowman,
Jerry Adair and Dick Ackerman had four-baggers
for Huron. Connie Juelke and Ed Bowman
each had three hits. Bob Peterson picked up the win
in relief.

Mitchell held on to shade Pierre 5-4. Kernels took a 5-0 lead
after six innings then held off a rally by the Cowboys in the late
innings. Mitchell got solo homers by Bob Burr,

Lefthander Andy Swota pitched and batted Huron to a 4-3 win over
Rapid City. Swota allowed just eight hits and a single earned run.
With two on and two outs in the 9th inning Swota bounced a single
to right to score Dewey Kuehl with the tying run.
The go-ahead marker came around on an error and Jerry Adair's
single plated an insurance run. Swota got out of a bases-loaded
jam in the bottom of the 9th, allowing just one run, as the Elks held on
for the win. Adair led the Elks with three hits.

(July 9) Yankton scored two in the bottom of the 9th to
shaded Pierre 5-4. Lon Bonczek belted a three-run homer for
the Cowboys in the first frame but Jack Bristol held
Pierre in check the rest of the way. Ed Staab had a

scored two for the Cowboys.

Valentine Hearts pounded out 18 hits to down the Pheasants 15-8 at
Winner. First baseman Bob White drove in five runs for the

three. Third sacker Jerry George had three runs batted in
with three hits, including a pair of doubles. First
baseman Pat O'Keefe led the Winner offense with a homer,

and drove in a pair. Pat O'Keefe was the big gun for

(July 12) Rudy Trbovich held Watertown to seven
hits and fanned eight as Pierre downed the Lake Sox 4-1. The only run he
allowed was Pernal Goldy's homer in the bottom of the 9th
inning.

Yankton Terrys erupted for five runs in the top of the 12th inning to
take an 8-4 victory from the Pheasants at Winner. Right fielder

(July 16) A three-run 7th inning was enough to give
Yankton a 7-5 win over Pierre. Merlyn Jorgensen homered,

Centre fielder Gene Duffy also a pair of homers for the
Kernels. He knocked in three and scored three. First sacker

In a pitchers' duel at Mitchell, the Kernels shaded Pierre 2-1 as
Tony Risinger fired an eight-hitter for his 4th consecutive win to
best Dick Smallwood, who gave up just three hits.

the Cowboys.

Bob Wiltse worked out of the jam. Ed Staab

(July 30) Lefthander Jim O'Toole fired a
three-hitter for his sixth straight victory as the first-place Kernels
downed Rapid City 7-2. Catcher John Janocha belted a
homer for Mitchell. Len Hunt's homer accounted for
both runs for the Chiefs. Dick Wiegand took the
loss.

Righthander Jim Dickey pitched a six-hitter as Pierre Cowboys
turned the tables on Huron with a 2-1 victory. Elks had taken a
2-1 decision the previous night. Cowboys notched the winning
marker in the 9th inning as Pete Maynard singled, was
sacrificed to second and scored on Steve Walker's single.
Elks plated a run in the 9th to break a string of 19 scoreless innings
by Dickey. The newly acquired hurler shutout Mitchell 1-0

Harry Wise so he could rejoin the Yankton Terrys. Wise had
moved over to the Chiefs when it appeared Yankton would have to quit the

Watertown dumped the Elks 10-1. Playing manager Kermit
Wahl paced the Lake Sox with four hits, including a two-run homer, a
double and two singles. He drove in three runs. George

the winning pitcher. Vern McKee was the bright spot

Huron picked up a win by forfeit when Valentine Hearts walked off the
field after a dispute with umpire Frank Tritz in the bottom of
the third inning. Hearts were leading 4-2. An argument broke
out when Huron's Red Allen went from first to third on a
single by Tom Orton. Valentine first baseman Bob
White claimed Allen had missed second base. Hearts' second
baseman Joe Frisina was ejected along with playing manager
Nick Adzick who had littered the field with his catching
gear. Valentine had taken a 4-0 lead off Elks' starter Dave
Thies in the first inning.

(August 20) Catcher Dayton Todd, without a hit in his
previous 22 trips to the plate, crushed a bases-loaded double in the
third inning to send Rapid City on the way to a 9-0 win in the opening
game of their playoff series. Todd drove in five runs in the
contest. Len Hunt knocked in three with a pair of doubles.
Chiefs got outstanding pitching from Harlan Dalluge who
held Huron to just four hits in posting the complete game shutout.
He fanned 12 and walked three.

had two homers for the Lake Sox with singletons to Dick Howser,

(August 21) Huron Elks got a two-run homer by Rudy
Mayling and a homer and triple by Dick Ackerman to
down Rapid City 6-4 to tie their semi-final series at a game apiece.

(August 23) Winning pitcher George Schmid laid down a
squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 9th inning to score Chuck
Ellis with the winning run as Rapid City edged Huron 2-1 to capture
the semi-final series two games to one. Ellis had reached on a
fielders' choice with one out and moved to third on a single by Dave
Clary. Elks had tied the count in the top of the 9th on
Rudy Mayling's homer. Schmid had scored the first
Chiefs' run in the 6th inning after drawing a base on balls. He scored
on Don Quayle's single. Schmid held the Elks
to seven hits while compiling six strikeouts. Andy Swota
was the hard-luck loser.

A crowd of 3.600 fans jammed Sioux Park Stadium at Rapid City on
Saturday as the Chiefs downed Mitchell 13-6 in the series opener.
(August 25) The Rapid
City Chiefs captured the Basin League title with a 3-0 win over Mitchell
in the final game of the playoffs. The two teams had finished the
regular season tied for the top spot with records of 29-13. The
final game drew a crowd of more than 1,900 in Mitchell, the largest
crowd of the season.
(December 11) Don Schwall announced he has signed a
professional baseball contract with the Boston Red Sox. The bonus
was reported in excess of $50,000. Schwall, also a University of
Oklahoma basketball star, quite the squad on Monday. The
righthander, from Ypsilanti, Michigan, compiled an 8-2 record and hurled
a no-hitter in the Basin League last summer.
(December 23) Jim O'Toole, a junior from the
University Wisconsin, signed with the Cincinnati Redlegs for a bonus "in
excess of $50,000". O'Toole had a 4-4 mark for Wisconsin in the
spring and posted an 8-1 record with an earned run average of 2.79 with
Mitchell of the Basin League. (Another report said he had a 12-1 record
with an average of 12 strikeouts a game.)
