SOUTHERN
ALBERTA LEAGUE :
Outfielder Lynn Duncan of the Medicine Hat
Superiors was the offensive standout of the 1958 Southern Alberta League
leading in almost every category. Duncan won the SABL batting title with a
.409 average and led the loop in hits, home runs, runs scored and runs
batted in. He tied with teammate Ron Mertus for the most
doubles. Tom Gonzalez of Vauxhall compiled a .515
batting mark but did not achieve enough at bats to qualify for the batting
crown. 110 at bats were required to qualify. Granum's Brack
Bailey was the runner-up with a .378 average and he tied with Frank
Amaya of Lethbridge for the lead in triples, each with 5. Amaya
finished fourth in batting with a .358 average, just behind Ed
Fallon of Vauxhall.

E.R.A.; Third in Whiffs
MITCHELL --
Jim Ransom of the Valentine Hears was the only Basin League player
to finish the season with a batting average higher than .400 as he wound
up knocking the ball at a .418 clip for the season, according to
official league statistics.
Ransom's
closest competitor was teammate John Feldman who had a
.376 average for the season. Two Pierre players, John
Herrnstein and Ted Schrieber finished the season with
a rush and wound up with .355 and .361 respectively.
A three-way
tie developed for the doubles honor. Ted Schrieber, Pierre,
Hank Paskiewicz of Rapid City and Billy Wells of
Valentine tied for the doubles lead with 15 each.
Wells also finished ahead of the field in the runs batted in
department with a total of 51.
Don Betzen of Valentine was the winningest hurler in the
league as he compiled a 8-2 mark for the season.
Dick Radatz of Watertown had 107 strikeouts to lead the
league. Frank Carpin of Mitchell was second with 95.
Dick Weigand of Rapid City led the pitchers in the earned
run averages with a 2.19 average for the season. Dave
Thies of Huron posted a 2.66 mark.
All statistics are based on all games completed in the Basin League
during the season except three which were not reported. There were
two games which were scheduled but were not played because of
postponement.

(The HURONITE and THE DAILY PLAINSMAN also
carried a column by Dick Wood on the release of the final
statistics.)
The Basin League season was a hectic one this summer
and toward the end of the year it would have taken an official
scorekeeper, working full time at the job, to keep up with the
off-the-field disputes. The column frankly got a little sick of
the whole thing and completely ignored a couple of beauts, including a
hassle between Pierre and Rapid City over post-season playoffs.
But elsewhere on this page is printed the final
"official" Basin League statistics as released by the league office at
Mitchell and we've simply got to take issue with several points
There are several places in which figures for the
Huron Jims in the official statistics differ sharply from those posted
by official scorer Milt Pronk. Monday night, with Pronk's records at our
disposal, we spent a couple of hours checking the marks given us by
Milt. And after that session we can truthfully say that anyone who
tries to find anything wrong with the meticulous records kept by Pronk
is in for a frustrating experience.
Therefore, convinced of the accuracy of the Huron
team records, we shall proceed to take issue with the marks released by
the Basin League office. It should be pointed out that the Huron
team records are based on official scoresheets from both home and road
games and include league games only, the same basis the official league
records are based on.
First of all the league records show Len Van De Hey
with a .346 average while the Huron ace actually had a .351 mark. Van De
Hey's two-base hit total is not listed in the league records but his
total is not listed in the league records but his total of 14 should
have been good enough to tie him with Herman Charles of Yankton for
fourth place in league standings.
And there's Andy Swota's earned run average. The
veteran left-hander actually posted a 2.29 mark which would place him
second in the league in that department. But league records don't even
mention this figure. Also unmentioned is Jake Tarr's 1.42 E.R.A.
in 31 1/3 innings. It's possible Tarr did not work enough innings
to receive mention in this department but we've never seen any minimum
or maximum set up on this sort of thing.
Also slighted badly by the league office was the
slugging performance of Jim's first baseman Carl Bush. Bush slammed 14
home runs, which ties him for first place and had 44 runs batted in,
good for third place in the league standings, yet neither figure is
mentioned by the league office.
In all fairness to the league office it must be
pointed out that there are a couple of possible reasons for these
omissions. One is, of course, the human error in keeping such a
maze of records. But more likely is the possibility that some
scoresheets of Jims road games were not properly delivered to the league
office.
This is just another example of the weakness of a
league office that's run on a part-time basis. We're not, at this
particular moment, taking any slam at the individuals in the loop office
this year but rather the setup as a whole which sees several public
spirited citizens trying to do a full time job in their spare time.
It's high time the Basin League quit trying to furnish big-time baseball
with bush league front office methods. |
