drove in four runs with a homer and double to pace Yankton Terrys to a
14-9 win over Mitchell Kernels in the Basin League opener at Yankton.
Frank Howard also blasted a homer for the Terrys.

(June 15) In a wild season debut at Watertown, the Huron
Jims demolished the host club 24-5. The Jims pounded out 19 hits
and took advantage of seven errors. They scored ten runs in the
first inning and added seven more in the 3rd before a disappointed crowd
of 1,000. Len VandeHey drove in eight runs with four hits
for Huron. George Blash of the Lake Sox had the only
homer. Harold Kunkel picked up the win after relieving in the
first frame.

(June 15) A three-run 4th inning carried Rapid City to a 5-2
victory over Pierre Cowboys. A triple by Hank Paskiewicz,

a homer for the Cowboys. Bob Hoffman went the route ona

(June 16) Dave Thies fired a two-hitter as Huron
blanked Mitchell 3-0. Jims scored all three runs in the 6th inning.
Hal Haddican poked a one-out double and scored on a

received an intentional pass before Don Hormann drove in
the second run with a double and Corky Buckstead knocked
in the final marker, also with a double. Curtis French
took the loss.

(June 17) Huron won its third straight, whipping Pierre
12-6. A seven-run, 8th inning salted away the victory for the
Jims. Huron had just two hits in the frame but was helped along by
three errors, four walks and a wild pitch. Connie Juelke,
the Jims' playing-manager, led the offense with a homer and triple.
The Cowboys had plated four in the 4th inning to take the lead.

inning to give Rapid City Chiefs a 6-4 win over Valentine Hearts
Tuesday. Bob Middleton had reached on a fielder's
choice and moved to third on Dolph Regelsky's single. Carey
drove in both with a double. Regelsky's homer in the 8th had
knotted the count at 4-4. Bob Hoffman was the
winning pitcher.

(June 18) A four-run 8th inning proved decisive as Huron won
its 4th consecutive game, 5-1 over Valentine Hearts. Bob
Tedesco allowed just five hits, in his first start, in going the
distance. Jims had ten hits, two by playing manager Connie
Juelke. Billy Wells poked a triple for the
Hearts.

(June 18) Rapid City Chiefs pounded out 21 hits in a wild
affair at Yankton, doubling the Terrys 20-10. First baseman Don
Quayle hit for the cycle for the winners blasting a homer, triple,
double and two singles. Outfielder Glen Plaster belted a
pair of homers and third baseman Ken Hunt and left fielder
Len Hunt also had four-baggers. Starter Harlan
Dalluge was the winner. Harry Wise took the loss.

(June 18) Watertown exploded for nine runs in the 5th inning, on
just two hits, and coasted to a 15-7 victory over Pierre.

of three bases-loaded walks and a three-base error with the sacks

(June 19) Richard "Dixie" Walker pitched Pierre to its
first win of the season, 9-3 over Yankton. The former Marine held
the Terrys to seven hits. Walker gave up two runs in the first
inning as Danny Howard doubled in a pair then settled down
to retired 18 consecutive batters. Pierre plated four runs in the
3rd inning as Carl Paylor knocked in Walker and LeMar
Jacobs, who had walked. Bill Raeshe capped the big
inning with a two-run homer. Cowboys scored another three in the
8th as Raeshe doubled, Ken Monschien singled and Art
Dillon clouted a triple. Hank Overin went the distance in
taking the loss.

(June 19) Pinch-hitter Ron Cronan poked a homer in
the top of the 9th to carry Valentine by Watertown 5-4. Hearts had
fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the first inning for the win.
Jim Ransom tied the count 4-4 with a solo homer in the 7th inning.
Lake Sox outfielder Dick Hogan crushed a three-run homer
in the first then knocked in Bill Horning with a sac fly
in the 3rd to provide all the runs for Watertown. Jack
Hale picked up the win with 9th inning relief by Keith
Nichols. Walt Bryja took the loss.

(June 19) Dick Wiegand held Mitchell to just three
hits to help Rapid City edge the Kernels 3-2 in a twilight start at
Mitchell. The Kernels took the lead in the first inning as Eddie
Schiltz walked and moved to third when a high fly by Bob
Miller was lost in the twilight sky and dropped in for a double.
A groundout score the first marker. Rapid City bounced back in the
second. Don Quayle's pop up in the infield
dropped in safely and he moved around on a walk and scored on a single
by Hank Paskiewicz. In the 5th inning, John
Janocha knocked in the Kernels' second run with a long single to
centre. Chiefs plated a pair in the 7th for the win. Ken Hunt
led off with a walk and scooted all the way to third as
Wiegand bunted and reached safely on a wild throw to first.
Dayton Todd's double scored Ken Hunt and Len Hunt's
single notched the winner.

(June 20) Valentine, without a hit for six innings, exploded
for eight runs in the last three frames to down Mitchell 8-5. The
Hearts, who managed just four hits, took advantage of seven errors by
the Kernels. The first hit off Larry Nosse was a single off
the pitcher's leg in the 7th inning. Jerry Good
followed with a double and John Feldman knocked it both
with a single. Hearts took the lead, 5-4, with three in the
8th, two scoring on Billy Wells' double. Mitchell
tied the score in the bottom of the 8th as Vince Robison
drove in a run with a fly to centre. But, with one out in the 9th,
Mitchell's defense fell apart, making four errors to hand the Hearts
three runs.

Ziegenbein in the 8th, picked up the win. Jim Hammond,
who followed Nosse to the hill in the 8th, took the loss.

(June 20) Yankton Terrys announced the addition of four
players, including Wilmer Fields, a pitcher-outfielder from Ponca
Rica, Mexico. Two collegiate right-handers will join the team - Frank
Anderson Jr. from Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa and
Bob Schwartz from the University of Illinois.
Anderson pitched in Canada with Saskatoon last season. Schwartz
pitched in the ManDak League with Bismarck. Rex Johnson,
an outfielder from the University of Southern California is the fourth
new player.

held Huron to five hits as Pierre Cowboys blanked the Jims 4-0. The game
was scoreless until the 8th when Pierre loaded the bases and Bill
Raeshe's single scored a pair. Ted Schreiber

impressive debut with Watertown knocking in five runs with a pair of
homers as the Lake Sox blanked Mitchell 10-0. Dick
Radatz hurled the shutout, holding the Kernels to four hits.
He fanned six while issuing five walks and throwing three wild pitches.
Bohlender, with eight years in pro ball, had three hits and scored three

belted a two-run home run in the 8th inning to help Watertown shade
Rapid City 6-5. It was the Chiefs first loss after six straight
victories. The Lake Sox had gone ahead 4-3 in the 7th inning with
a three-run rally, highlighted by a lead-off homer by Lee
Bohlender. The Chiefs came right back with two in the top of
the 8th. Dolph Regelsky clouted a homer and Len
Hunt knocked in another with a single. Big right-hander
Dick Radatz was the winner, in relief. Jim Flynn
took the loss.

six-hitter to help Valentine top Huron 8-3. It was the Hearts
fourth straight win. Seven errors marred the contest played in 50
degree weather at Valentine. A three-run 6th inning helped put the
game on ice for the Hearts. Jerry Vodicka reached on a
fielder's choice, Allen Kiddy walked and Jim
Ranson followed with a double and Jerry Good with a
single. Vodicka had the game's big hit, a triple in the first
inning.

Terrys came from behind to shade Valentine 11-10. A four-run 4th
inning had given the Hearts an 8-7 margin before the Terrys answered
with a pair in the 6th and another two in the 7th. Bob
Schwartz picked up the win in relief. Jack Hale
was the loser. Outfielder Billy Wells belted a pair
of homers for the Hearts. First baseman John Feldman also
had a homer as did centre fielder Roy Menge for the Terrys.

3-2. Trailing 1-0, on Bill Hornings' leadoff homer in

Brewer, Ed Staab, and Rex Johnson to tie
and then plated two more on miscues by the Lake Sox. Sox got one
back in the 8th as Horning doubled in Fred Hoffman.

Huron Jims built up a 7-2 lead after six innings and held off a Pierre
rally in the 7th to down the Cowboys 7-5. Hal Kunkel was a

win and knocked in four runs with a pair of doubles. He also
scored twice. Fred Scott had three hits for the winners.

inning to down Huron 8-7. Daylon Todd's two-run double to centre
was the key hit. Don Quayle homered for the Chiefs.

Mitchell for the second straight time as Watertown topped the Kernels
6-0. Last Sunday, he shutout Mitchell 10-0. It was the 3rd
consecutive win this season for Radatz after finishing 10-1 in 1957.

needed with a two-out homer in the 2nd inning. Lee Bohlender

(June 28) Jake Tarr clouted a grand slam homer
in the top of the 9th inning for the winning margin as Huron shaded
Rapid City 10-9. The Chiefs, with a three-run rally in the bottom
of the 9th, fell just short. In a game which featured the long
ball, Carl Bush belted a pair of homers and winning
pitcher Roger Higgins hit one for Huron. Hank
Paskiewicz and Len Hunt registered four-baggers for
Rapid City.

21 hits in notching a 13-7 victory at Rapid City. Hearts scored six in
the first frame. Four were charged to Dave Baldwin who
failed to retire a man, giving up a hit and three walks. Jerry
Vodicka, Jim Ransom, Jerry Good and
John Feldman each had three hits for the Hearts.

Regelsky and Tom Garcia each got three hits for the
Chiefs.

had a shutout into the bottom of the 9th when the Jims scored twice to

(June 30) A six-run outburst in the 3rd inning carried Huron
to a 13-8 victory over Yankton. The Terrys got the early jump with
three in the first inning. But the Jims came storming back in the
3rd helped by four hits, four walks, an error and a sacrifice. Bob
Tedesco went eight innings for the win. Yankton erupted for five in
the 8th on a grand slam homer by Bob Klaus and a single shot by
Wilmer Fields.

(July 1) Doc Daughtery clubbed a grand slam homer in a
five-run 7th inning to carry Mitchell to an 8-3 win over Huron before a
crowd of about 3,000 at Sioux Falls. It was one of five hits for
Daughterty. The game was an exhibition match to help promote the Basin
League in the city. 18-year-old Fred Nosse went the route for the win,
allowing just one earned run. Carl Bush poked a homer for the
Jims.

(July 1) Rapid City Chiefs didn't take long to turn the
tables on Watertown's Dick Radatz. The right-hander from
Michigan State had come into the game with a 3-0 record and 21 2/3s
innings of scoreless ball. Chiefs scored a pair in the 3rd and a
singleton in the 4th to take a 3-0 lead. Radatz clubbed a
three-run homer in the bottom of the 3rd to tie, but Rapid City got a
two-run homer by Dolph Regelsky in the 5th and a three-run
shot by Lee Carey en route to a 9-3 victory before 1,300
fans. Harland Dalluge held the Sox to six hits in
going the distance for the mound victory.

(July 2) A wild throw to first in trying to make a double
play, in the bottom of the 9th inning, gave Pierre Cowboys a 7-6 triumph
over Valentine. The Cowboys received three consecutive walks to load the
bases before Carl Paylor bounced to shortstop. The toss to
second got an out, but the relay to first was wide as the winning marker

Robison, who had three hits and drove in three. Doc
Daugherty punched out three hits, two of them doubles.
Sherwood Brewer had two hits and scored three times for the Terrys.
Darrell Read survived 13 hits to register the win.

(July 25) Pierre Cowboys notched their 7th straight win in
the second half of the split schedule with a 4-3, 10-inning, triumph
over Rapid City Chiefs. Pierre scored in the bottom of the 9th to tie
then scored in the extra frame for the win. Chiefs took a lead in the
first on Dolph Regelsky's homer. They went up 3-0 in the 3rd on
successive singles by Lee Carey, Regelsky and
Len Hunt. Cowboys stormed back in the 3rd on Bill
Raehse's two-run homer. In the 9th, Ted Schreiber
singled to scored pinch-runner Ben Baker with the tying
run. In the 10th, John Edwards' bases loaded
sacrifice fly scored Carl Paylor with the winner. Hank
Hamrick picked up the win.

(August 12) It was a night of offense in the Basin League.
Carl Bush clubbed three homers and drove in seven runs to pace
Huron to a 10-2 win over Watertown. The outburst gave Bush 14
homers and 42 runs batted in. Jack Tarr held the Lake Sox
to seven hits in registering the win. Len Van De Hey had
three hits and scored three runs for the Jims. Purn Goldy had
three hits for the Sox.

Duffy had a three-run shot as Mitchell trounced Yankton 13-3.

(August 20) Don Montgomery's single with two out in
the bottom of the 9th inning scored Fred Boiko with the
winning run as Pierre Cowboys captured the Basin League championship
with a thrilling 8-7 win over Valentine Hearts in the final game of
their three-game playoff series. Boiko had doubled to lead
off the frame. Pierre had a 7-6 lead into the final frame but the Hearts
tied the match on Ron Cronan's double scoring Bobby
Burr who had singled.
Valentine had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a walk and singles
by Jerry Vodicka, John Feldman and Burr.
Cowboys got a pair in the bottom of the first and tied it in the 3rd on
hits by Boiko and John Herrnstein.After Pierre had
taken a 5-3 lead, Valentine erupted for three runs in the 7th on a
two-run homer by Cronan and a single shot by Ike Seaone.
Herrnstein's homer in the bottom of the 7th again evened the
count. Another homer, a bases-empty smash by Lamar Jacobs,
gave Pierre the lead after eight. Ben Baker was the winner
in relief.
