Introduction : With the withdrawal of the Regina club from the semi-pro
Western Canada League, the Southern League teams now enjoyed exclusive
rights to the geographic area south of Saskatoon. With that fact
resonating, all 9 Southern League entrants returned for another campaign
in 1960. The Lakers franchise, which had been based in Moose Jaw yet had
played its 1959 home games in nearby Rowletta, made the move
permanently to the small community some 15 minutes away, leaving the
Mill City with the youthful Mallards as their lone representative
in the Southern loop. Not to be outdone, the Mallards found a local
steel-processing plant, Mid-West Steel, willing to sponsor them and so
they became the Moose Jaw Steelers.
(May 20)
The Southern League got underway as the Weyburn Beavers, who upset the
pennant-winning Estevan Maple Leafs in last season's playoffs,
maintained their mastery over their Soo-Line rivals by posting a 4 - 2
triumph. A two-run homer by Dave Hoff in the bottom of the 7th and final
inning won it for the Beavers. The game was halted because of darkness
after Hoff's decisive blow off loser Lyle Thompson. Hoff, who took over
for Weyburn starter Keith Covert in the 5th, also got credit for the
pitching victory. The Leafs were only able to manage two hits yet had a 2
- 0 lead in the 5th. The Beavers had but four base raps yet three of these were
for extra bases.

Mallards, opened the new Southern League season by romping over the
Notre Dame Hounds by a 16 - 7 count. Right-hander Dick Mandzuk went the
distance for the Steelers, scattering seven hits, for the win. Bruce
Smith
was the loser. Dennis Williams had a hot bat for Moose Jaw, spanking out
three singles. Lorne Humphreys and Terry Wasley both had a brace of hits,
one of Humphreys' being a triple and one of Wasley's a two-bagger. Ken
Townsend led the Hounds' offensive attack with three singles. Ed

including a 3rd inning solo home run by Murray Jenkins. Larry
Fischer,
with relief help from George Guillaume in the 6th, got credit for the
win. The Beavers collected 12 hits, one a bases-empty home run by Ed
Wyant in the 7th. Weyburn starter Gub Kasperski was charged with the
defeat. Guillaume led Marquis at the plate collecting a double and two
singles. Jenkins had a single in addition to his home run while George
Cannon collected a pair of singles. Wyant wound up with two hits for

for the win in this marathon encounter while Arnie Floyd, Regina's third
chucker, was saddled with the defeat even though he pitched
magnificently in an 11 2/3 inning relief chore. The Lakers out-hit
Regina 19 - 12. Wally Blaisdell and third baseman Jerry
