(June 14) A three-run 5th inning carried
Watertown Lake Sox to a 3-1 win over Huron in the opening game of the
1962 Basin League. Right-hander Jack Whillock held the Jims
to seven hits, while fanning ten, in going the distance for the win.
Huron lefty Bruce Miller took the loss.

Lloyd Flodin
led off the Lake Sox 5th with a double and moved up on a single by
Marl Carter.
Whillock's single plated the first run. Carter came around to
score on a sacrifice fly and Whillock scored on a wild pitch.
Huron notched its only run in the bottom of the 5th when
Larry Smith, who had two
doubles and a single on the day, knocked in Al
Otto who had singled.

Miller (L), Buhrt (7), Hoagland (9) and Howell
(June
14) Pierre Cowboys kicked off their 1962 schedule with a 9-5
triumph over Winner as Tommy Brown and White each had a
double and single to pace the offense. Earl Griffin
scattered ten hits to take the win. Third baseman Robert
Floyd had three hits for the losers.

Huron Jims rode home runs by Fred Michalski and Al Otto
to a 5-2 decision over the Lake Sox at Watertown. Jims notched all
their markers in the 2nd inning. Dan Heun knocked in
a pair with a double. John Crain tossed a
seven-hitter for the win. He fanned nine and walked six.
Chuck Bagby was the loser. Sox scored in the first
frame as Ron Goodwin singled, stole second and came home
of Jerry Renner's single. They added another run in
the 9th on a walk to Marl Carter and singles by Paul
Soden and Walt McKenzie.

John Crain was the hero on the hill and at the plate as Huron
scored in the bottom of the 9th to edge Rapid City 6-5. Crain
relieved in the top of the 9th to halt a Chief's rally then singled in
Rich Gonski in the last of the frame to produce the
winner.
Jims took the
lead in the 3rd on singles by George Mayer, Tom
Hoagland and Lou Howell. The Chiefs came back to
tie in the 4th on a walk to Bud Haney and Jon
Anderson's homer. The homer was the only hit off starter
Hoagland over the first seven innings. A three-run 8th,
highlighted by Mayer's homer, gave Huron a 5-2 lead. Larry
Smith's double accounted for a pair. Chiefs knotted the
count in the top of the 9th on a bases-loaded walk, a single and a
sacrifice fly.

Winner Pheasants erased an early three-run deficit to top Pierre 9-4 to
climb out of the cellar in the Basin League standings. A
two-run homer by Woody Woodward and a bases-loaded walk gave
Cowboys the lead in the second inning. Winner came back with a pair in
the 3rd on Bill Ethridge's bases-loaded single. A
three-run homer in the 5th by Louis Lagunas gave Winner a
5-3 margin. A two-run homer by Rusty Uresti in the
9th put the game out of reach. Pete Craig went the
route for the win. Earl Griffin took the loss.

Rob Snow recovered after a shaky start to pitch Sturgis to a 6-2
victory over Watertown. Snow allowed two runs over the first two innings
then settled down to pitch scoreless ball the rest of the way.

Wayne Pietri bashed a homer, double and single to lead Watertown
to a 12-4 win over Sturgis in the lone action in the Basin League.

Larry Bohannon had a shutout until the 9th in pitching Pierre
Cowboys to a 5-3 win over Rapid City. He allowed six hits.
Tom Brown's homer was the big hit for the winners, Mike
Hunter had three hits, including a pair of doubles for Rapid
City.

Home runs by Chuck Knutson and Fred Michalski
helped carry Huron Jims to an 8-6 win over Rapid City Chiefs.
Huron had an 8-5 lead in the 9th but scored once and had the
bases-loaded with two outs before Tom Hoagland relieved
and ended the threat. Ron Burht, who replaced starter
Bruce Miller in the 5th, picked up the win. Dave
Nunnenkamp took the loss.
